How do you store your child's shoes?

Originally I had a basket for shoes to be stored loosely (not in boxes).  But I have a few new pairs that came in boxes and my sister just sent me about 10 prs of shoes, from her boys, that are all in boxes. For now, I have them all in one clear tote in the closet, in their boxes.  I was thinking maybe I'd take out one size at a time, and keep them loose in a basket (leaving the boxes in the tote).

Do you keep your child's shoes in boxes or loose?  Do you store all the boxes in the child's closet?  If you keep the shoes loose, do you still save the boxes somewhere?

  • Haha!  I only bought probably 3-4 prs, a friend gave me 2 prs, I got 1-2 at my showers, and now my sister just sent about 8-10 prs of shoes, sandals and boots.  Yeah, adding up quickly.  Luckily, it's a wide range, from 0-3 cloth/leather type to size 7.5 snow boots. :-)

ETA: No, I don't think you're a bad mom.  Baby doesn't even need shoes for quite a while, anyway.  I gave in to cutesy little ones, and my sister and friend gave me the bigger ones, which I'll just store for a few years.

  • I have all the shoes in the size she's currently wearing on one shelf of the bookcase near her dresser.  The next sizes up are in the closet and ones she's grown out of are in bins with clothes that are too small.

If it makes you feel better, Lila pretty much didn't wear shoes at all until she was about 9 months old.

Of course, now she has more pairs than I do.  I have a problem.

This is exactly what I do!

  • Cooper barely ever even wore Robeez. His feet are fat and the elastic left marks. He got real shoes after he learned to walk. Now he's got a pair of hand me downs from Ben. And I just bought a pair of sandals for the summer. So we only have had one pair at a time. I keep them in the car so we have them if he needs them when we are out. I only put shoes on him if he is walking outside. Otherwise he just wears socks most of the time.

  • My little guy has 4 pairs of shoes, I keep them in a drawer with his socks.
  • We just keep them with our shoes on the shoe rack. The ones they've out grown or haven't grown into are in boxes in their closets. My kids only have a handful of wearable shoes at any given time anyway.

  • where ever they leave them? Stick out tongue

seriously, we have a shoe rack, and we are trying to teach them to come in, take em off, put on rack.     reality is G is lazy and wont take them off, when he does its often wherever he is at the moment, or in the bathroom before bath...   Gee...   I often find adult mens shoes all over too.... wonder where he gets it from.

  • For baby shoes, I kept the boxes. They outgrow them so fast and they don't get "worn" I was glad I still had the boxes when I went to resell them. They go for more if you have the box. Now that they wear their shoes much longer, I do have the boxes for Ryes shoes but they were his first real shoes. We bought 3 pairs when he started walking at 10ish months and he STILL fits into them! Best shoes ever! They all look great too. Now that i've been doing ALOT of consignment sale shopping, shoes are not in boxes and Each kid has a shoe bin in their closet that they go into loose.

honestly for Rye, I had one pair of great shoes from Nordys for when he was little and when he walked, we got him 2 pairs of Stride rites. A brown and a blue nice casual, but could be nice shoe. Then a pair of white Adidas. Those have been the best shoes EVER and totally worth the $40! (daddy has the same shoe too..it's cute when they have them on)

Pretty much this, L has a shelf in his closet that is way to high to access easily so I store all the "grow into " shoes up there and that is for both boys.

  • Thanks for the replies, everyone!  I think I'll keep things as they are for now, since the majority of the shoes he won't even be wearing for a year or two (or more).  Those can live in their boxes in a tote in the closet.  And the small ones fit on the shelf in a basket, even in boxes.

I think it's amazing that some of the shoes my sister sent me made it through 2-3 little boys and are still in good shape.  She only sent me the ones that looked ok and had life left in them.  They're almost all Stride Rite.

    Thanks!

  • We keep the shoes she's outgrown or has yet to grow into in a flat, clear plastic tote and then the ones she wears we keep in a drawer she can open and close.

  • We bought on of those over the door plastic pocket holders.  It works great for seeing all the shoes and keeping them organized. We keep the bottom row empty though because he can reach those now!
  • In terms of storing sizes that are too large, I keep them in their boxes and put them in larger plastic bins in the closet by size.

For Jillian's shoes we have a bin by the front door that we throw all her shoes in.  This became convenient once she started putting on shoes by herself.  She sometimes remembers to put her shoes in the bin, we sometimes have to remind her, and we often just end up putting them back ourselves as we find pairs while housecleaning.

Hayden has fewer shoes (Jillian didn't really wear any until she was walking) and they are stored in her top drawer.  I'll probably get a bin for her too when she gets bigger.

  • he didn't wear any shoes until he was about 10 months, and then they were kept in a basket under his changing table so they went on when he got dressed.  Now they are in a basket by the door so he knows where to put them when he takes them off.  We only have about 2 pair of shoes at a time in rotation.  Anything not in a daily rotation (dress shoes, summer shoes, ect...) are stored with DH's and my non every day shoes, in a shoe storage thing in our hall closet.
