Synthroid

Hey ladies - I wanted to throw this question over here.  Hope you don't mind.

My nurse called yesterday and said that my thyroid level is "borderline high", so I've been prescribed synthroid.  One tee-tiny little tablet every day, and we'll retest again at next week's appointment.  I've googled up a storm, but I want to hear what your experiences have been with this rx.  Side effects?  Success?  What does this mean for our upcoming cycle?

TIA :)

Re: Synthroid

  • I've been on it for about 2 years.  It keeps my levels in a good place... I was hoping to feel more energetic/speed up my metabolism and watch the pounds slide off... for me none of that happened :(  But of all the meds I've been on during this process... synthroid has been the easiest.  No side effects.  Good luck.

  • My TSH levels have been 3.09, 4.7, and 4.1. I see an ME who did the last TSH as well as T3/T4 and an u/s. On Synthroid 50 and go in next week for a followup. I was under the impression that it takes a few weeks for your levels to stabilize.

So I'm not hypothyroid per se, but being a bit hyper is advised for TTC by some. Even being in the 4s would not interfere with cycling or cancel a cycle. YMMV. I have no s/e. I was told it could make you feel a bit more peppy.

When you take the pill you need to have an empty stomach, and not eat for an hour. You also have to avoid certain foods and things in your PNVs for 4 hours, so you may have to switch up your PNV timing. If you go to their website, they have a coupon for the medication. Check for the OOP cost, mine is $8 cheaper OOP than with my insurance.

  • The pps have good advice/comments.  I just wanted to point out that testing your TSH again in a week isn't going to give you a good idea of how effective the dosage is - it takes AT LEAST 4 weeks (preferably more) to fully reflect in your bloodwork.

  • I was put on Synthroid a coupld of months ago.  The first 2 weeks I noticed anxiety symptoms when I would try to sleep at night (racing heartbeat) as well as night sweats, but those went away within the first 2 weeks.  The most annoying part is having to take the medicine on an empty stomach and not eating for an hour afterwards.
  • Thanks for all the info, ladies!
