Trouble TTC

metformin

does anyone have experience with Metformin? I am about to start my second round of clomid but in my last dr appt we discussed the possibility of adding Metformin in if this month doesnt work. My dr said that the only problem with it, is that unlike clomid, you have to take it daily and it can often lead to tummy troubles and the runs... Just trying to decide if it is worth it.

Re: metformin

  • I've been on and off it for years....I'm not TTC right not but have been on it for over a year, it's the only thing besides BCPs that can control my PCOS symptoms of acne, irregular cycles, etc and I won't take BCPs again.

It does suck when you start, I won't lie. But your body adjusts pretty quickly in most cases, especially if you take the extended release version. MUCH easier on the tummy.

Taking it daily isn't an issue for me, I take it with my prenatal vitamin and vit D supplement each day in the morning.

  • I have been on it for years. It helped regulate my cycle, kind of. I use to have about 4-5 periods a year. Now I have 9-12. You will have stomach issues in the beginning, but your body eventually adjusts. The dr will have you slowly increase you dose to help you get use to it. I would say it's worth it...

  • For the beginning of using it, stock up on immodium to keep you from being in the bathroom too much.  But yes, your body adjusts.  I'm on 2000 mg and have been on it for over a year now.

  • do it. it helps clear cysts from your ovaries so the clomid can do it's job. i have been on it (2000 daily) since august and just got my bfp from my second cycle of clomid+ovidrel. yeah, it doesn't do the best things to your tummy but it is so worth it. i also lost nearly 20lbs when i started it!

  • Are you getting on Metformin to help regulate your cycles or are you insulin resistant? If so I recommend it. I take 1500 mg a day and it seems to be working to make my cycles a little shorter. I will say it definitely gave me majjjjjjjor stomach probs in the first two weeks. Diah..vomiting, nausea, headaches etc but it does get better. I don't seem to have any of those side effects anymore. The only time I have a few bad days was last week when I upped my dose another 500 mg. But again it happens but it's worth it. If you do get on this...do not drink. I have gotten sick everrrrry time I have drank unless I didn't take a pill that night. Good luck to you!

  • I have been on met for 9 months now (1000 mg/day) and it has done NOTHING for me. However, I was always the person who never had AF except for maybe once a year. I am insulin resistant which is why my doc wanted me to take it but he thought it might help to regulate me... not so much.

As for the effects, the diarrhea was HORRIBLE. I read a post on here about how it is supposed to help with cysts while you are on clomid and I have to disagree. I was on it for 4-5 months before I started clomid and it didn't help me at all. I had so many cysts that my doc had to take me off of Clomid completely now I'm on my 2nd month of femara which a LOT more luck!!!

    Either way, GL to you!
