I have GD. I've noticed that since I started my insulin (N & R) in December, I haven't really gained that much weight. Now, I'm not complaining just wondering because I have been eating like a horse. I've even gotten up in the middle of the night to make sauce (from scratch) w/meatballs and pasta or BLTs. I only gained 1/2 lb in one week. In all, I've gained 20 lbs. Could this slow weight gain be because of the insulin?
Re: Weight gain question...GD'rs
I was never insulin-dependent with my DS, but my weight gain slowed way down and I even ended up losing after I started the diet. That's very typical of most GD'ers that I know. If your doc isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either. I gained about 25 total with my DS and he was a healthy 8#9oz.
Also, I don't have GD this pregnancy and my gain has been about 20lbs. My doc is happy with that.
I'm Type I diabetic and my insulin needs have gone up tremendously and this has caused weight gain. I'm up about 20lbs for the entire pregnancy but it didn't really start until month 4-5 when I started using almost double my normal amount of insulin, so I cannot attest to weight loss on insulin.
I have diet-controlled GD and my weight plateaued for a month after I started the gd diet and since then I've only gained a half pound per week and I'm up 15 pounds total.
From reading around, it seems to be common for weight to plateau or slow down once on the gd diet. My OB isn't concerned about it because the baby is growing well. I'm not sure if it's related to the insulin for you, but it's worth asking your doctor about if you're concerned. I think a 1/2 pound gain per week is perfectly fine!
