Breaking #1 of the bottle

How do you do it, considering there are bottles all around for DS? We do tell her bottles are for babies and got her some cute cups, but I worry about creating jealousy between them.  At the moment she rarely sees him getting a bottle, since I EBF, but they are in the house

  • i'm totally not sure. alex still prefers milk (only) in her bottle.

she actually took a cup of milk last night (color me shocked) so i guess we'll have to see how it goes!

  • I have been trying to wean DS from the bottle before the new LO comes, and I am having a ton of trouble.  I finally got him to take milk from a cup (which I hadn't been able to do before), but when he gets tired, he wants his bottle and that's it.  It's a struggle.  I'm hoping it gets easier.  Good luck to you!

  • We did it cold turkey, basically.  We were trying to wean him from them but it just wasn't working.  He has done fine, except he really won't drink milk now.  He's eating plenty of yogurt and cheese, though, so I'm good with that.
  • We weaned my DD off the bottle right after her first birthday because we knew that "bottle envy" could be an issue.  It was actually pretty easy.  Early on she got bottles in the morning and before bed and was offered a sippy in between (you might have to start with the cups that mimic bottles like Nuby).  Then we dropped the morning bottle and offered her milk in her highchair with her breakfast.  Then we dropped the evening bottle when we realized she was full from dinner an didn't need it.  It all took about 4-6 weeks total.  By 14 months she was bottle-free.

Also, DS is still EBF.  He only gets bottles of breastmilk with the babysitter or from my husband if I am out doing something.  So she rarely sees bottles.  And because we weaned her 2 months before he was born, she doesn't even give them a second glance.

I am one of those people that thinks it is odd to see kids with a bottle in their mouth behond 18 months or so.  Not odd in a judgy way.  Just odd because I find bottles to be such a PITA and I don't understand why parents keep offering them.

  • Thanks for your input everyone.  We're working on it, and on day 3 and she really hasn't thrown too many fits!  So far, so good.  Easier than I thought, I guess.

I feel the same way about diapers/pull-ups!
