What is a zumba class?

I'm just curious. I've heard many people talk about the classes and enjoying them.

Re: What is a zumba class?

  • Its where mlf goes to get her freak on.

I dunno, exactly, but mlf looks great lately and I think its the only exercise she does.  She wears a sparkly skirt while she does it.

  • Basically aerobics to Regaton (spelling?) or any other mexican flair music :)  You do use a few salsa steps and things like that, but really think aerobic dance class.  I really like it, some people just can't get the coordination down and get frustrated, but hey, at least you're moving.

It IS where I go to get my freak on!  It's simple dance moves to really fun music and the best workout EVER.  I hate, hate, hate working out that feels like working out, and this doesn't - it feels like dancing in a club.  But at 8am.  Sober(ish).  My class is a mix of pop and salsa type music.  I've been doing it for about six months and I feel great.  I can run the steps without being out of breath and some of my pants fit looser now.

I think a lot depends on the individual instructor.  I love my regular instructor but when we had a fill-in for a few weeks it was just kind of "meh".

  • Yep - they are fun!  And a great workout without feeling like you're working out.  Think lots of booty and hip shaking and arm movements, with some dance steps mixed in.  (At least the ones I've been to.)

  • Well, at my gym it is *not* the things listed above.  I won't go into detail about what it is, but I'm pretty sure that's all instructor-related.  Wink

Hypothetically it's a great cardio workout, though.

  • Anyone know if you can take these classes at places other than a gym?  I'm going to give up my membership after the baby is here but I've wanted to try a class.  I'm already clumsy as it is, and pregnancy has taken that to another level, so can't see trying it right now.
  • I know you can take zumba classes at Castle Hill Fitness without being a member of the gym there.  You either pay by the class or can buy a "class pass" for a slight per class discount.

Note: I have not taken a zumba class there yet, so I have no idea about the instructor.

  • It's a Latin-based dance fitness class.  It's (supposed to be) mainly latin with some  hip hop, pop music, international songs and choreography mixed in.  Depending on your instructor, it can be a ton of fun and you can get quite a workout doing it.  Unfortunately, every instructor is different and Z u m b a F it n e s s doesn't have a "standard" type of instructor so the level of workout and instructor can vary.  You can take them all around town: gyms, dance studios, neighborhoods, etc.  I teach at a couple of places and LOVE it.  That is what helped me lose the last 25 pounds of baby weight that I had.

Hope that makes sense.  I"m typing this really fast since I only have a minute.

    Score, that's my 'hood.  Thanks!
