Peanut allergy moms

You all may be aware of this, but I was excited!  I made a dish last night that called for peanut butter.  Of course I won't bring peanuts of any sort into the house, so I subbed Sun Butter for it.  I was amazed at how much it tastes like peanut butter.  Very pleasantly surprised!  That's all.

Re: Peanut allergy moms

  • Yay!  Sun Butter is yummy!  My brother has a serious peanut allergy so when I was still at home that's all we had in the house.  She used to have to go to a health food store to get it because they didn't sell it at the grocery store :)

I'm happy you found a substitute you like!

  • Sun butter is the bomb! I've never tried to cook with it though. Good to know.

Yeah, that's awesome!  My brother is only 19 - the discovered his peanut allergy when he was 2 (when he almost died because a baby sitter gave him some for the first time :/  17 years ago everyone acted like my mom was making it up and thought she was weird for trying things like sun butter, you know, hippie stuff :)  It totally rocks that there are alternatives in the regular grocery store now!

  • Do you know if sun butter is okay if they're also allergic to tree nuts?

  • Yep!  It is made in a peanut and tree nut free facility.  The ingredients are basically sunflower seeds and sugar.  I would give it to Katelyn, but it says it is made on the same equipment that handles soybeans, and she is very allergic to soy.

  • Wow! That's awesome. I'll have to try it. I'm glad you found something to work for you, at least.

Will Katelyn ever grow out of any of her allergies? I know with peanut allergies they say there's a 20% chance, or something like that.

That's a good question.  We have no idea.  We will go back in June to get her retested.  Hopefully, she will have outgrown some things.  I know she is definitely still very allergic to dogs!

  • Did you find it in the organic section at Kroger?  DS loves him a PB&J but his preschool is peanut free.  I had bought some almond butter, but it's made in a facility that handles peanuts.  I would love to try this with him.

Yep.  It is in the organic/natural section at Kroger.
