...and you have it rear facing, which recline do you have it on? Right now, DS is 4 months old, and we have it on the furthest recline position. I would like to put it on the middle recline position to give more room for the passenger seat (we have a jeep and my knees touch the dash when the seat is reclined all the way) but not sure if he's too young.

Yep, he's still too young.  He won't need the recline at 9 months old.  It's for proper and easiest breathing - my son is 20 months and I still have it set on the lowest recline because his head drops to chest when he sleeps if it is any further up, it makes me nervous.  We did however, take out the car seat leveler so it does sit a little higher.

I thought that the seat instructions say that the seat is supposed to be on the furthest recline as long as it's rear-facing. 

It can be anywhere from 30-45 degrees.  

I am about to take it out and make it more upright, we still have it on the most reclined setting but DS is ready to sit up more.

It really depends on your kid.

My DD is rear-facing in her Marathon. I believe it is still on the furthest recline.

DS is 16 months and we still have his Marathon at the fullest recline.

At 4 months old, your LO is too young to be at the middle incline.  He doesn't have enough head and neck support.

We have ours all the way reclined. It is supposed to be all the way for infants. We had a car seat safety inspection professional come out and check ours.

Luckily our 2011 Sonata is ginormous.... 

Apparently, it had been done incorrectly by my hubby who swore he installed it correctly by the book. The safety lady said MOST people install them wrong,so I'd REALLY go get it checked by a pro. Your hospital can refer you to a company....
