If you had solar screens installed

If you don't mind sharing- how much did you pay?  We got an estimate that we think is pretty good but I am not sure.  We have 19 windows (mostly fairly odd size- floor to window) and they quoted $1600.*ETA $1300(oops!)  Does that sound right?

Also did you find that it really helped?

Thanks!

Re: If you had solar screens installed

  • We have them on all of our windows. As much as I hate the look of them, they help a TON! The rooms are not near as hot. It shades the inside.

  • Yeah, we are not thrilled with the look but we have to do something! Our electric bills in the summer are insane.

Hmmm, maybe we should consider solar screens.  Our electric bill is out of control and our windows don't do anything for the heat.  Please keep us posted on the process and let us know how well it works!

  • Can you let me know who you got a quote through?  We're looking to get our front 2 windows done.  TIA!

  • we have them here but I can't help with the cost since they were here when we moved in.  but I wanted to say that they make our rooms really dark.  We don't have them on all windows, just the ones that get the most direct sunlight.  They do help a ton- and those rooms stay cooler.  But I was going to say that you might consider just doing the windows that face the direct sunlight and save yourself the money of doing the little windows that you can get by with just regular screens.  for example, I would hate having them in my bathroom where I like sunlight so I'm glad that window was skipped over.  just my two cents.  :0

Ha! I definitely agree!  But, we only have 2 small side windows that do not get direct sunlight (and we are not doing those).  The front of our house faces east and the back west (ofcourse), so that means direct sunlight for ALL of our windows at some part of the day. Tongue Tied And if you remember the back of our house is nothing but windows!  I love the natural light coming through, and blocking it makes me sad, but we have tried just about everything else(weathered doors and windows, sealed and insulated outlets,  radiant barrier, extra insulating in the attic, and ridge vents on the roof)  to cut down the elec bill due to the summer heat and nothing has done that substantially.

they did our neighbors (which is how I found them) and they were happy with them.  We have been happy so far, very nice and responsive, just wanted to be assured that it is a good price.

  • I called last summer (or maybe the summer before) after I saw an ad (ETA: whoops, that should be ad, not add Embarrassed) in the impact.  we have one window upstairs that gets full sun and it's super hot.  the guy basically told me to go to home depot and do it myself - you can buy the screen stuff and just redo the screen that you have (if you have one - if not, you can buy a kit at HD, too).  I never did it because it's upstairs, but it doesn't seem that it would be too difficult or expensive.  IDK, $1300 seems like quite a bit to me.

I am all about DIY, but not for this.  Our house is a freakin house of windows, they are all huge.  And a lot are upstairs.  I wish I had the patience to DIY the screens though.
