VBAC

Any VBAC moms with GD?

I got diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes yesterday. Sad Do any of you have it or did you have it and have a successful VBAC? I'm worried that it's going to cause problems and I'll end with a c-section. My DS finally flipped head down and now I get this news. Just looking for some reassurance. When I went in at 30wks and found out he's head down the OB did my belly measurement and said I'm measuring 4wks ahead. I know without u/s (and even with) it's just an estimate, but I'm worried now.

Re: Any VBAC moms with GD?

  • I had it, but was diet-controlled so I feel like that made a big difference.  The other big difference was my midwife group since they would have let me go to around 41w+.  I ended up having DD at 40w1d w/o induction and she was 8 lb. 11 oz. and 20.5 inches long.  She was a chunker, but proportionate so they don't think her size had anything to do with GD (my DS was born at 40w6d and was 8 lb. 2 oz. and 22 inches for comparison).  Since I was so well-controlled they didn't treat me any different except for weekly NSTs starting at 35w and a growth u/s was optional and not something they brought up.  I ended up doing one anyways and DD's was measuring 2 weeks ahead and her head 4 weeks ahead.  Let me know if you have any other questions!  It's a pretty scary diagnosis when you are hoping for a VBAC since it just feels like another hurdle and I know that if I was with my old group they wouldn't have let me go past my due date without a fight.

  • Thank you so much! That makes me feel a lot better. I haven't gotten to see my MW yet since diagnoses so I don't know how she's going to feel about continuing towards VBAC. We'll see. I had only "slightly" elevated numbers and will be diet controlled. Hopefully my story turns out like yours!

I had a GB VBAC in december.  i'm also lazy and copied my response from a GD post below so some parts may not be totally relevant, but you get the gist.....(LOL)

Like chicscub, I had a GD VBAC at 40w3d (in December). I also didn't have it with my first pregnancy - my c/s delivery.  My daughter (C/S) was 8lb13.4oz, my son (VBAC) was 8lb 0.2oz

I took extra care to follow the diet strictly, monitor my sugar religiously, and exercise my ass off to help keep my sugars down as well as keep my weight gain in what my doctor considered the "optimal" range to help my chances of VBAC.

It can be done, with a doctor/midwife who has patience and doesn't want to get the baby out early b/c it might be big - but you have to really work hard at controlling the sugar and keeping your conditions optimal!

Don't stress - you still haven't even failed the 3 hour yet!  I've read several articles lately that link stress to increased chance of c/s (several different factors into play but nonetheless...).  Good Luck, let me know if you have any questions!
  • blah...i was hoping to VBAC too.  today was my first appt with my doctor since my GD diagnosis and she didn't seem overly enthusiastic about my prospects of VBAC.  since i was induced at 41 weeks with DS1, she's not thinking i'll come early and they won't induce with a VBAC.  i'm on the fence about what do to at this point...

  • Im in the same boat. I was just diagnosed with GD as well and was hoping for a VBAC. The doctor hasn't changed mind yet on the thought of a VBAC, she just wants to monitor how big the baby will be. With DD#1 I was induced at 40 weeks and ended up with a c/s. I'll do whatever is best for the baby, but I'm still hoping for a VBAC.
