Adoption

Did you get a home study before choosing an adoption route?

The process still confuses me, but I was thinking we should get a home study first and then decide which adoption avenue to date. Is this a bad idea or the norm?

  • Bad idea.  First, they expire after a year.  Second, some states don't even require you have them before you get a placement (if you're doing DA).  And third, there are the following issues with different types of adoption:

If you do IA, your homestudy will be country specific.

If you do DA through an agency, that agency will want to perform your homestudy.

If you do private DA, you will need to find your own social worker and it's probably (not impossible, but highly probable) that an agency will not want to take it if you sign up with one of their programs...they'll want you to re-do it with them (one exception would be if you found your own birthmother and needed to use an agency for whatever reason to assist in some portion of the adoption...they would probably accept it in that circumstance).

If you do FA, your homestudy will need to be done through the county you live in.

Pick your program/path/agency...and then move forward with your homestudy.  :)

  • It depends. Some agencies will not accept a home study done by another agency.  We did our home study before we knew what agency we would work with, but that is because we went with an adoption consultant who networks with agencies throughout the country.  The agencies she works with will accept home studies that were done by another agency.

I know of at least one agency where I live that refuses to accept home studies from any other agency.  Also, if you decide to adopt through foster care, it is very likely that the state will want to conduct the home study (or use certain approved independent contractors). I would decide what route you plan to take and then get a home study.

Many thanks Mrs. B and Go_Dawgs, that clarifies a lot.

I swear, just when I think I have a handle on what's going on, I find myself back at square one. D'oh!

  • The hardest part is picking a path/agency!  *hugs*
  • Bad idea. Pick an avenue, then get a homestudy.

    GL!
