Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Chicken Nuggets

So I made all DS's babyfood, now that he is eatting more finger/table food, I am not sure what to do. I planned on making things like chicken nuggets, etc. with "real" chicken, then just freezing them.

Here is the problem, I caved at Costco and bought a box of Yummy Chicken Nuggets. Is their a healthy store bought chicken nugget?????? or do I need to suck it up and make my own???

I know homemade is not hard, but I am on WW. So I make my food, DH food, and then DS food. So I was looking for a short cut.

Re: Chicken Nuggets

  • It's all what you're comfortable with. There are people that will freak out on you for sure, but a lot of kids grow up eating a lot of chicken nuggets and survive. I have an emergency box of Ian's in the freezer because the nights I work my husband will give her toast and rice cakes for lunch and dinner no matter what I leave for him to cook. Ian's has no artificial flavors or preservatives and is antibiotic-free chicken so I was comfortable with that. I prefer to cook from scratch when I'm home, though.

I think you're nuts for cooking 3 separate meals! Your guys won't eat healthy with you? My husband gets stuck eating all my experiments, tofu included lol.

  • I know a lot of people freak out about chicken nuggets, but I don't really think they are that bad if you can find a "healthy" brand. I tried chicken nuggets with DD once and she thew up, so I haven't tried again. She does, however, love fish nuggets (and veggie nuggets) made by Dr. Pragers brand (bought them at Whole Foods). Whole Foods actually has a whole frozen baby food section with organic/natural frozen foods. I am sure some people consider this to be bad/junk food...but for us it works and she loves them! If I do give her frozen food, I try to give her the "healthier" options - typically from Whole Foods or Trader Joes.

ETA: I just want to say that I do think its a problem if kids are eating chicken nuggets all the time...and I do think there are "better" chicken nuggets than others. Obviously fresh/homemade food is best.

  • Since DS eats what we eat, if we have chicken nuggets one night, then he gets chicken nuggets as well. If it is through the week and there is not enough time between working, picking up the kids, soccer or t-ball then they are the frozen kind. I really only make things like that from scratch on the weekends because I have a little more time. Do what you know is best for your family, and if that means a quick frozen meal then so be it.

  • I might get flamed for this, but I give DS chicken nuggets at least once a week. I buy the Tyson kind.

I'll put on my flame suit too!  Chicken Nuggets are one of the few things that DD will eat.  There is no way I'm making a meal for her, a meal for DS, and one for DH and I.  He eats what DD eats most of the time.

  • *sighs* It's your call, as always.

Baby E isn't eating much finger foods, but back when G was starting table foods, I would portion and set aside the items at each dinner that were okay for G to eat - the veggies, sometimes the meat, sometimes the carb. He would eat a small portion of whatever we ate. We almost always eat a balanced meal, so it wasn't too hard to just portion some out for him to cool while I was finishing setting the table, etc.

If you are making something that you think is really a great meal for the baby, make a bit extra and freeze it. Then if you have a night where you and H are having something quick with less nutritional value, you can get out the freezer meal for the LO.

Really, though, just make the best choices you can as a mom. Don't worry about what others think of you.

  • It is fine. My 10 month old eats chicken nuggets at least once a week since she primarily eats what her brother eats. She won't eat any purees, except the pouches, since she feeds herself.
  • Do Bell and Evan's chicken nuggets.  I buy them at Safeway and Whole Foods.

  • I didn't know chickens had nuggets.

Seriously though, you are the mom. Make the choice you feel is right for your baby.

You can cut up a chicken breast when you make your own dinner.  I throw an extra breast in and it lasts DS a few days.  I freeze anything that will go bad before he eats it.

This is what I do. That and I have used one package of organic chicken nuggets.

Its up to you. I personally do not like feeding her non hormone free meet and I'm not a fan of traditional chicken nuggets. But many on here don't mind.
