How do you organize toys/bikes, etc in your garage?

As our boys are getting older, they're getting more bikes, sports stuff, etc. I think I need a better way to organize it all in the garage. We just have a standard 2-car garage, but in the spring/summer, we move the 2nd car outside, so we have a little more space to work with until the snow starts to fly again.

How do you keep your garage organized?

Re: How do you organize toys/bikes, etc in your garage?

  • what's this "garage" you speak of?
  • Ours are organized badly.  :)

DH put hooks up on the walls to hold the bikes and hockey net (but I think he put them up too high because it is really hard to get the bikes down, and I'm tall).  He put hanging bins to hold all the balls, chalk, etc.  And everything else is just piled into a corner.

  • AngryI park my car in the driveway and they take over the garage.  It would help if DH didn't have so muchshit in the garage too.  One of these days I've got to tackle that beast!

  • You'd never know by looking at it right now, but at times, there is a method to the maddness in our garage.   We have a small 2 car garage too. The stairs to the kitchen door are on my side and there is a workbench on DH's side.  There is enough room under the workbench to park 6 bikes/scooters/toy trucks.  Then we have 3 5-gallon buckets where we throw DS's shovels, rakes, balls, chalk container & accessories.    Along my side, there is a pegboard where we hang our rakes and shovels as well as stuff for the lake -  beach chairs, floats, noodles, etc.   DH keeps the lawn mover, trimmer, and fertilizer thingy under the stairs (where we keep wood during the winter).

  • We have a shed in the backyard where we keep all the yard stuff so that frees up some space in our garage. We have two suv's so they take up more room anyways.

We have a bunch of hooks to hang whatever can be hung (golf clubs, toy lawnmowers, beach chairs, etc). Since we don't have a lot of room on the sides, most of the stuff we hang is thin.

We put up some shelves at the end and have a bunch of those large rope handle buckets on the top where we throw toys. I try to keep them organized by type of toy but that doesn't happen much. The bottom shelves are reserved for smaller toys like bubbles, chalk, etc.

Our biggest issue is bikes/scooters/wagons/ride on toys. We have a million and no good easy way to store them. We've been keeping them in the shed for now but once Dh starts need to get at the lawn tools on a regular basis, this won't work. We plan on going through all the toy buckets this spring and getting rid of whatever is no longer played with or keeping them in the attic in the garage and do a toy rotation. That will free up space at the end for the big stuff.

  • Our garage is not looking too great right now, but when it is organized we make use of a lot of hooks in the dry wall, as well as a peg board. Other than that we try to neatly keep things up against the wall and on some large shelves that we have in there too.

I wish we could fit one of our cars in there, but we have way too much stuff for that to happen any time soon. When it warms up enough around here we are going through everything and re-organizing.

  • DH is garage crazy.  I swear it is cleaner and more organized than my kitchen.

    No junk.  At all.

Oh, and no cars.  And we live in a snowbelt.

Having said that, we use old kitchen cupboards (pantry style) bolted to the walls for smaller items; things that are once a year use get stored in the rafters; seasonal items (skis, hockey bag) get stored in the rafters and things that can be hung on the walls get hung on the walls.

Kids stuff that cannot be hung are tucked under other items.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Organization? I'm not sure what that word means? We have the bikes and ride on toys on one side. The chalk, bubbles, and other small things in a plastic bin. And the larger toys like balls and such in a huge plastic bin there too.
