pest control spraying while pregnant.

DH and I bought our house about a year ago. Our house is right at the bottom of a mountain and we have some HUGE spiders. I'm terrified of spiders so I normally think they are all big but I'm talking as big around as a golf ball!! We have alot of neighbors out here but I hadn't got a chance to see what they use. Would it be safe to have someone spray?

Re: pest control spraying while pregnant.

  • Good question. We're planning on having our place sprayed in late April/early May.  I think I'll ask my OB about this one tomorrow at my 32 wk appt.

  • My office is sprayed frequently (we must have a bug problem) they use something organic (I asked immediatly after finding out I'm preg).  So I think it depends on what they use, when you call just let them know!

    GL!

  • I would think it would depend more on exactly what products are used than what your OB thinks. I know any kind of pesticides etc used here on lawns have varying degrees of toxicity. Perhaps call the person or company who you would get to do the spraying, let them know you are pregnant, find out what products they offer, and then do your own research on those products. Or ask your OB at that time about specific products and what they think. I would imagine there are many options on the market for different kinds of sprays.

  • There are many options used, I believe the most commonly used one in homes is pyrethrum which is from chrysanthemum plants, it is the active ingredient in Raid. The toxicity to humans is relatively low but I would still find out what they are going to use and call your OB. I called the pregnancy toxicology hot line (or whatever it's called) before I had to spray many different pesticides for research for work, and they said as long as I wear the proper protective equipment and follow the label I would be fine.

Me too -  I become irrational and hysterical. (Last time MH and I were in Sri Lanka visiting his family and a huge spider crawled out from under the toilet paper, I jumped up peeing all over myself and then was trapped in the bathroom crying because I didn't want to move past the spider to unlock the door and get out.)

Honestly, even if the spray weren't safe, I would just go stay with a friend or family member for a few days while and after they did it.  Of course, I'd research tons first on organic sprays, etc.  Shudder, I am creeped out just thinking about this.  Hope your uninvited visitors are gone soon.

  • We have terminix and have the entire time I've been pregnant and before that. We got them originally because of spiders. They come out and spray usually when we aren't home but they will do the inside as well which we just call and have them come out. We have talked to the guy who sprays our house and talked with terminix specifically because we also have dogs and don't want them becoming ill. We have been told that with what they spray as long as we let it dry before coming in contact with it which is about 15 minutes it's perfectly safe. So basically for the time they are in the house I go outside and vice versa or we have them spray on my husband's day off. They also come on Saturdays so it would be very easy to be out of the house.
