Help Pls!!!

How to teach my kids how to wait for either something they want especially wait for their turn.  Any techniques or suggestion?  Thanks!

Re: Help Pls!!!

  • We have always just reminded DD#1 to say "Excuse me" if she is trying to interrupt a conversation, like to tell us something.  Same for if she wants something.  If she doesn't ask nicely ("please") then we sort of ignore her request, or just look at her, and then she gets that we are waiting for a please.  Same for thank you.  Lots of reminding.  But repetition, that's what's worked for us.

  • My son use to be terrible about interrupting me while I was having a conversation with another adult.  We taught him to hold our baby finger when he needed us. If he forgot we would tell the adult "excuse me " and would ask my son "what do you do if you want my attention?" he eventually figured it out and is polite and patiently (sometimes impatientlySmile) waits his turn.
  • We absolutely insist on polite language when DD interrupts. We're still working on getting her to not interrupt at all when I'm on the phone. I also have her hold my hand when she's waiting so she knows I'm not forgetting about her.

As for taking turns, because DD is an only child (for now!), I've always made a point of not having her go first. I try and give her lots of opportunities to practice patience. So when we play a game, sometimes she starts first and sometimes I start first. We serve guests first, etc. Practice, practice, practice!
