DD is 20 months and I'm noticing some of her diapers seem to be suffering in the elastic department. We have a big stash but the RaR are probably our workhorses -- and on most either the gusset elastic or the outside elastic seems to be gaping on her legs. Now, admittedly we use these most for overnights and stuff them with both inserts and a hemp - so they could just be "too full" but eek, I'm worried it's the elastic. Having never paid attention to this before what do you think the useful life of elastic in diapers is?

Re: Life of elastic - how long does it last?
I think it depends to some extent on the diaper type. Some have better elastic than others.
We use mostly BG's. My oldest one is over 2.5 years old, and I replaced the elastic in it a few months ago. My next oldest was purchased about 3 months later, and I haven't replaced the elastic in it yet, but it could definitely use it.
So, I would say around 2-3 years, for BG's. I mostly line dry, too, which supposedly helps preserve the elastic.

I think it really depends on brand, use and your wash routine. Washing in hot and machine drying will wear out elastic a lot more quickly.
Elastic is pretty easy to replace if you have a sewing machine, though. I've done it in a handful of dipes.
