Getting prepared for LO in the sun this summer...Question?

So,  now that the weather is starting to warm up here in Ohio, I am excited to take DD outside and let her get more fresh air and explore!  I bought her a little sun hat and I need to get her some sun screen.  Anyone know what the spf should be for LO's?  I am assuming I need to put it on her any times she is going to be outside for an extended period of time, plus use her little hat.  What do you all think, or what are you going to do?

Thanks!

  • The sunscreen I have for DD is SPF 50. It's made for babies. I put that on her along with her hat and sunglasses. Only when we're outside for long periods, though.

What do you consider long periods? We took DH out for a stroller ride to the park yesterday. Probably out (not in full sun 100% of the time) for about 20-30 minutes and I didn't put sunscreen on. Should I have?

For that length of time I probably would have put sunscreen on my DD, but I live in Texas where it's HOT. I just mean long periods as opposed to walking from the car into the store or an every day kind of thing.

  • Today the pedi said to use at least SPF 30, but that more was fine too.  I will probably use SPF 50 because she is very fair just like me and my husband.

  • I read this https://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/ and it really opened my eyes.  There are some pretty nasty chemicals in sunscreen.  I ordered Badger sunscreen for my LO and the whole family.

WOW!  Thanks for that link!  I am definitely going to print that info out!  Thanks everyone for your input!
