Austin Babies

NBR: Camping

BF and I are going camping this weekend and we are looking for a new camp ground that we haven't been to before.  We would like a campground that has bathrooms with decent showers, is on water (preferably a lake for our kayak and fishing), good hiking, and within a two hour drive to Austin.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

  • I've never been but my friend went to Canyon Lake recently and she loved it.

  • We always LOVED going to Krause Springs out in Spicewood.  It's so beautiful out there!

  • Blanco State Park. They may be full. I know they book up once the weather gets nice. We have kayaked there before and people fish all the time. Just don't eat the fish. :)

Ditto!  We've been here several times and camped here once and loved it!

  • I liked McKinney State Park and we've been to Pace Bend off of 71.  Both had the criteria you're looking for but I *think* you had to pay for shower access.

  • McKinney Falls State Park--We went a couple of years ago, and the bathrooms were quite nice. At that time, there was no extra charge for showers (which a pp mentioned) for people using campsites.

The hikes that we took were short (we're not very outdoorsy), but we saw lots of cool stuff (rocks, falls, etc).

It's also close by--just South of town. I will warn you that we could hear airplanes going by since it is not too far from the airport!

Whoops.  I guess I should have specified.  McKinney showers were free.  I think you had to pay a little extra if you wanted shower access at Pace Bend.

    Yes I agree!

  • We like Pace Bend.  There's some great spots that have awesome views of the lake.
