I'd like to have my engagement ring stone reset, but I need some inspiration. If you love your ring and setting, tell me about it (or PIP if you feel comfortable.)
I think that a fairly popular setting for oval stones is something like this:
However, I think the little diamonds around the center stone can detract from the center stone. It reminds me of lace, which I'm not a huge fan of. I do think this next one is really pretty, where the "collar" (term I just made up for the ring of diamonds around the center stone) is very proportionally small.
My personal taste would be something simple like this:
Google tells me this is Katie Holmes' ring, with an oval diamond:
I looooooove Kate Middleton's e-ring (this one is a cheap imitation)...what if you used your diamond as the center stone and used color stones around it?
I also love the two rows of diamonds on this one but I am also a sucker for lots of sparkle.
Ladies! Great ideas! I especially love the idea of setting it in a halo but using colored stones. I love love love sapphires so that is a thought. Keep 'em coming. I love me some bling!
My wedding ring is an eternity band of sapphires and my e-ring is just a simple solitare (4 prongs holding it up) with an eternity band of diamonds. It's something you could do w/ an oval, no problem. That 1st ring Guava posted kinda (without the diamonds encircling the center stone) looks like mine. Anyway, I bet you could do an eternity band of sapphires with the diamond in the center. That would look lovely!
I don't have a picture. My e-ring is a blue diamond. I wanted something different and was going in with a non-diamond in mind. Guy showed me the blue diamond, DH said yes, and I was sold. It's a blue surrounds by a smaller white on either side.

AJL--I wish mine had the eternity band like that, but mine are channel-set b/c I was too worried about losing a diamond without realizing. But those 2 rings are gorgeous and I quite like the east-west setting of the oval, that's really cool, I haven't seen that in a ring IRL.

Blue diamond! I bet it's lovely I love blue stones. My dream engagement ring was based on this (cushion sapphire with half-moon diamonds). My DH was set to purchase a ring similar to it but his sister convinced him that even though I said I want a sapphire now, I'll regret not having a diamond. *sigh* Don't get me wrong. I love the stone! I just sometimes wish I had this on my finger. (Wow! I really sound snooty, huh? )
Go to Krugers downtown and check out what they have. Like MMT, I love lots of sparkle and they have tons of different settings, including ones with different colored stones and ones with different colors of gold (rose, white and yellow.) Lots of options to get creative with!
ETA: Here are my engagement and wedding bands, I wanted something more unique and antique looking

not snotty!!! Too bad she talked him out of it. When I get home to my comp, I will post a pic of it. I love that not so many people have it. It's not super big, but I needed a low profile due to how much manual labor I do.

mine is very similar to the first one guava posted, but it has a flush setting - which I love since it doesn't catch on anything. I was trying to find better photos but I don't want to go through all 4378294739247 wedding pics!

I love sapphires too and love this ring! You could do this in reverse with your diamond in the center and sapphires around it. I know a great person in the jewelry biz that could help you with that.
Here are the pics of my ring. Please keep in mind that I do a lot of manual labor and we are currently doing block prints in class...so it's not the cleanest right now.

I love my ring. I love to watch it sparkle in the sunlight when I am driving home.

Did you say it's a blue diamond? It's such a pretty shade of blue, very different! I like it a lot!

Joyco - something like this? (except that stone is ginormous! Mine is a bit more modest.
)

I also love the idea of setting the oval on its side (east-west). Kind of like this one?

Gorgeous!!!
HSArtteach - I'm excited to see your ring.
I'm blinded by all the bling in this post!

here's mine. Three stone "past, present, future" ring.
I would love to have the eternity band... but no such luck (or money).
