Phenylketonurics

Long word...these phenylketonurics are whats in sugar-free products, and there is a warning on them saying Warning: Contains Phenylalanine. I stay away from thiese products except for when its in gum. Has anyone's doc said they shouldnt be eating, drinking or chewing (gum) anything with this in it while pregnant?

Re: Phenylketonurics

  • Yes, that was one of the first things my doctor said I should avoid, although she didn't specify gum, but any artificial sweeteners in general. Didn't know how many I consumed until I started checking for it!

  • Crap.... I've been eating a Yoplait Light every day for breakfast, and just noticed this is one of the ingredients.

    Thanks for the heads up!

  • My doc never mentioned it, but I try to stay away from artifical sweeteners anyway. I used to eat Yoplait everyday. I switched to all natural yogurt and add in fresh fruit.

Do you know why your doctor said not to eat it? Does it have anything to do with your baby possible being born with PKU?

  • Do you have PKU or are you worried about the baby getting it? If you are just worried about the baby getting it, what you eat won't give your baby PKU. Avoiding artificial sweetners is a good idea either way of course.
