NPR: Red Egg and Ginger Party

Hi Ladies, I'm just wondering if any of you are familiar with red egg and ginger parties (I think they are custom in Chinese culture after the babies 1 month birthday).

I've looked online and seen mixed ideas on what to give as a gift.  I've asked some friends who say they are like baby showers and to give gifts but also have heard that money is appropriate.  TIA for anyone who knows.  I'm trying to figure out what's more appropriate - a gift or cash.

Not sure if this matters, but this is their second child.  Thanks!

  • I've seen pictures of the parties, but I'm not sure of the appropriate gift. According to my friend who lived for a few years in both China and Korea, money is usually appropriate for all occasions. I know for weddings it is given in a red envelope. I'll have to ask her about these parties.

  • A red envelope with cash is customary. I am unsure of the monetary amount however my mother in law will never tell me. But make sure to go to the bank and get fresh crispy bills. You can give a small denomination like 2 dollars to the baby directly for good luck and a larger amount to the parents (my husband and I always give at least what we estimate our meal cost). Also don't give denominations of 4, but 9's are great. Like a wedding gift from the in-laws would be $99 or $999 if they have money. I think giving multiple small envelopes is cool too. Just remember the overall spirit is for good luck, so if you don't have a lot to give it is okay. And don't expect thank you cards, no one usually sends them, they just show up to your parties with red envelopes later.

  • Thanks so much!  This is really good info.  I guess we're heading to the bank :)
