Re: how many....

  • This is my opinion of quantities for ONE child (and I do laundry for the babies about once every TWO weeks, so I might have a few more than necessary?):

burp cloths  LOTS, lol, like 20+ (I use about 2-3 per day, so it depends how often you want to do laundry)

blankets 2 big thick blankets, 3-4 thinner but soft blankets, 6-8 receiving blankets

swaddles at least 2, preferably 3-4

pjs  For sizes up to about 6-9 months, at least 6-8 in each size since that's all they wear. For sizes 9m+, about 4-5 in each size is good.

onesies For sizes up to about 6 months, maybe like 4-6 in each size, since they probably won't wear many (again, because they wear sleepers/pjs mostly). For sizes 6m+, approximately 10-12 or so in each size (when onesies are more common to wear, instead of sleepers).

wash cloths I use these only for bathing, since I use spitup cloths/burp cloths more frequently. I would say, about 20 cloths would be sufficient (you can get like 4/$1 at the dollar store), but I have about 50 per kid, since it's cheap and nice to just grab one if I need it.

    hooded towels 3-4 or so.

  • burp cloths- A lot. My DD was a big spit up baby. I used the Gerber "cloth diapers" for mine and they held up really well. I think I have like 16 or so. blankets- At least two...if you're using them in the car seat when you go places it's nice to have one to use and one clean if the one you're using gets dirty. swaddles - I never used them. I brought home like 5 of the blankets from the hospital and used them for her because they're awesome and perfect size. pjs - Depends on how much laundry you'll be doing. My DD slept in either onesies or the gowns. I had about 6 gowns and then lots of onesies. onesies - You'll go through a few each day in the beginning and especially if yours is a spitter. I think I had at least 10 in each size. wash clothes - 4. I just got those little 4 packs at Target. hooded towels? 3-4 (again depends on laundry and how often you give your LO a bath)

See, it depends on what your baby wears. My kids rarely wore onesies as newborns, they were always in sleepers/pjs. It wasn't until I felt like adding pants and socks to the mix did I add onesies. I did not think it was necessary to add a onesie underneath pjs.

ETA: You didn't have BIBS on your list. We have literally 30 bibs per kid because that's what we use to help keep the spit up away from clothing. Each time either kid eats (bottle for DS or food for DD) they have a bib on. We got those kinds with a soft front and a waterproof backing on them, we got them 10/$10 from Walmart.

Same here. I never saw the point. It's just double laundry.

  • i would recommend lots, lots of burp cloths for the beginning.  we now use them for nose wiping.

we had two or three cotton knit blankets that were nice to put over dd's car seat when we went out.  and at least 8 receiving blankets, which we used all the time.

i don't know if swaddlers will be necessary with a summer baby.  same with PJs, unless your house is very cold.  maybe something without feet.

but if you forgo the PJs, you'll need a ton of onesies.  basically, babies spit up or have blow-outs all the time, so they constantly need costume changes.

washcloths - i wouldn't get more than four-five.  you only need one at each bath.  and you can use your burpcloths to wipe up spills

hooded towels -  three or so.  i guess this depends on how often you do laundry.
