Pre-School and Daycare

PT question/pull ups related

Sorry if this is dumb, but I do need some help.  We're starting to PT DD and I want her in pull ups except for nap and bed when she'll be in a diaper.  When she's wearing the pull ups, do they need to be changed even if she doesn't go potty in them?  Or do we just keep the same pull up on until she has an accident?  I didn't know if it was like a diaper that gets changed every couple hours regardless.

Thanks for any advice - or even PT tips!

Re: PT question/pull ups related

  • We only change if she pees/poops in it.  Pull-ups definitely do NOT hold nearly as much as a dipe, so just be aware of that (we've learned that the hard way when DD has peed too much in her pull-up...leak!).

ditto pp, so it's good you are switching to a diaper for sleep time.  I'll also warn you that I think it didn't help in PTing.  If anything, DD spent some time experimenting with peeing in her underwear thinking it was just a cushier pullup.  I kind of think the pullup made it a little easy to equate pulling up anything with "hey, okay to pee in this".  I do wonder if that would've been different if I had stuck it out with diapers as those would have been much more different and there might have been a different motivation.

  • For us Pull Ups were an excellent tool b/c Harmon got the pee concept down WAY before the poop concept.

The way we did it was that we got him really excited for the Pull Up b/c it is a Toy Story theme.  We told him he could only wear it when he was ready to not pee in them.  If he peed in them we were going back to diapers.  He only peed once on purpose (not nap related or in the moment when he was really wrapped up in something and we forgot to take him) in them.  We put him a diaper for the rest of the day.  He never has peed on purpose since.

Now we are doing the same thing with poop.  If he wants to wear real underwear he has to poop in the potty. If he wants to poop in his pants he gets a Pull Up.  He loves Cars and Thomas the Train so the motivation for real underwear has worked.  He is doing really well.

I'm glad we did one at a time b/c he got such a great mastery on one before the pressure for the other started.  For us using his own motivation rather than telling him "it is PTing time" also made a huge difference (he is so stubborn).  I hate messes and this really has been so painless.

Also if you have a smart phone, I got a Pull Ups Potty Watch on my IPhone.  It is free and was great for reminding me to send him to the potty on regular intervals those early days.  He loved playing with the app when I was home and when I was working I would send our nanny or pre-k teacher a text.

  • If your child is ready to potty train, you don't need to change it unless it is dirty.  My DD only sleeps in pull-ups I would let her wear the same one for nap and nighttime.

  • We skipped pull-ups just because I felt it was an extra step I wasn't willing to take... My son learned really quickly with training underwear and naked time haha. We bought him Thomas underwear and Nemo ones and he never wants to pee in them, because if he did they had to be washed and he wouldn't get them back right away. Just see how it goes with your daughter and if she seems to be progressing- go with it! Accidents will happen, but the sooner they do, the sooner they learn! Hope that helps!
