stripping question...

I added a 1/4 tsp of blue dawn to a hot wash with my dipes and got NO suds.  what the heck? I thought it was going to be totally sudsy and I would be doing like 4 or 5 rinses.  When I opened the lid it still smelled like tide/ammonia.

What do I do???

    How hot is the water?  I use the hot water setting AND put in two large pots of boiling water.  I am not sure if that's what gets the smell out, but it's worked in the past.
