Cloth Diapering

Please explain the cloth diaper process

Never thought about using cloth diapers but I actually don't know anything about them really.
Some questions I have: (These might be dumb questions)
1. what do you do with the soiled diaper if you have to change the diaper and you are not at home.
2. How do you wash them?  Mainly if you have a particularly messy diaper. Tongue Tied

Any other helpful info you can provide would be great!
THANKS!

  • 1. Most people store them in a small wetbag, but a plastic grocery bag/gallon ziplock works in a pinch.

    2. Some people use a diaper sprayer (you can buy a fancy one or have a home improvement store employee Frankenstein you a cheaper version) or you can swish it in the toilet before you throw it in the diaper pail. EBF newborn poop usually doesn't have to be rinsed though. Also I haven't made it to the sticky 'just started solids' poop phase I hear about but from what I read, a lot of people use a plastic knife to scrape it off. Solid poos get plopped into the toilet.

Check out the board FAQ for CD more info. There's a lot of great stuff in there. Also, there is an unofficial CD board blog one of the ladies here put together. I forgot to bookmark it, but if you look through a few posts I'm sure you'll find it in someones siggy.

  • My diaper bag has a matching wetbag, which is waterproof and has a lovely zipper. That bag then gets washed with the diaper laundry later. Most wetbags will hold a couple (or more) diapers.

If you're worried about poop, babies aren't for you. Yes, washing diapers is poopy. But inevitably... so is washing babies. And washing baby clothes after a poo-splosion. For the first 6 months, it can all just go in the washer and it's entirely water soluble. After that, it gets a bit more involved. We have some flushable liners to lie on top of the diapers - we'll see if those work well for us. If so, then the top layer gets tossed and the diapers get washed as usual.

What diaper bag do you use (if you don't mind sharing)?

  • I bought a gorgeous one from NorthernMom - it came with a matching wetbag and change mat. Smile She's local to me, so I think I bought one of her "prototype" bags right before she started selling them in her store. I think it's a nice size - and I love the fabric. I can't claim to have used it with a baby, but it's all packed as his hospital bag and has room for 4 outfits and a blanket.
  • I use a gallon ziploc baggie

I prefer to rinse them with the  sprayer on our toilet, but some days I just toss them in the wash...the days I don't rinse I wash them on heavy soil. If they are looking stained I don't dry them I put them out in the sun to dry.

  • When I am not at home, I have a wet/dry bag that I put in my diaper bag.  It is perfect for keeping clean diapers in one side and the dirty wet ones in the other side.

I don't have a sprayer set up yet in the bathroom so right now I am rinsing in the toilet and then keeping the dirty diapers in a mixture of water and baking soda in the basement until I wash them.  I wash every other day.

Once you get a system that works for you, it will all seem like a routine and will be very easy.

    Good Luck to you!
