Ok really need help!

Honestly if its not bad enough that I think I have ppd, J is going to take us over the edge with his sleeping habits.  I'm going to talk to the dr tomorrow but I'm wondering if anyone else has been through this and what they did.  J is not sleeping more than 3 hours at a time and that is only from 7:30-11 and then he is up every 2 hours if not sooner all night long.  He won't drink more than 3 oz at a time but more like 1-2 oz.  I haven't had any dairy in a couple weeks and we upped his meds about 2 weeks ago.  I notice that when we up his meds he is great for about a week after sleeping from 7:30-4:30 but that has quickly gone down the tubes.  Do you think this is some sort of reaction to my bm?  Should I try some other formula?  And if I did what kind would one try?  I have tons of enfamil infant here from the hospital.  Should I just try putting him on that?

  • I have no worthwhile advice, but wanted to say that I'm sorry you're struggling so much. It sounds like you are still being a great mom.

  • We had S on Similac Soy formula and also on liquid zantac (Ranitidine) and prevacid for her reflux.

    Hang in there!

  • I'm sorry you are not getting any sleep.  It must make everything so much harder, I know that I don't function well without sleep.  For a 2 month old, waking every 2-3 hours is not that unusual, even for one without reflux.  Can your DH alternate feedings?  Can you hire a doula or night nurse for a few days so you can get some rest?  I remember how hard it was with one tiny healthy baby, I can't imagine taking care of a toddler too.  There is no shame in asking for help.  You are doing a great job.  Hang in there.

  • What meds is he on?

If it's the liquid (zantac?) it's weight based and they can QUICKLY grow out of their dose.  See if they will switch him to prevacid.  It's a little dissovling tablet.  We did 1/2 a tab in the am (on an empty tummy) and 1/2 before bedtime (again, empty tummy).  It was a miracle for us.

If you decide to try switching formula just remember it may get worse before it gets better -- switching often causes a few weeks of consitpation while they adjust.

  • Hugs Tiff!! It is really tough the first few weeks. I have 2 thoughts. 1. His meds needs to be upped. It is based on weight. And 2. I would get referred to Children's for a consult to see if he has delayed gastric emptying. I guarantee his poor sleep habits are due to refluxing. He is probably getting acid in his throat waking him up. Upping the meds or changing them should help. We are now on zantac and prevacid. You have to find the combo that works.

  • If he gets better with meds, id say it's the reflux and maybe you need to find another med that he doesn't get used to as quickly. I don't think you're on Zantac? But that's weight based and you do need to adjust often. But honestly, and I know this sucks, waking that often is not terribly abnormal at that age. That's why a lot if people cosleep so you can sleep through it. 7:30-4:0 is a crazy long stretch at that age. And if he does that with meds, then stops, I'd bet it that he hurts. Do you have him sleeping on an incline? Are you doing gas drops too? What are his poops like? I'm guessing it's not something in your milk.

  • Another thing... We learned at our evergreen class that your brain needs at least one stretch of uninterrupted 3-4 hour sleep to be able to replenish seratonin. Without seratonin you get depressed. So find one stretch at least where your husband can be on call and you can sleep.
