Correct pronunciation of Nadia

DH and I are disagreeing on this one. So, is the first syllable pronounced "Nod" like 'nod off', or "Nad" like 'natural'? I swear I have heard it both ways. Maybe it depends which side of the pond you are on?

I pronounce it like nod off.

Nah-dee-ah. The same sound as the a at the end of the word makes.

The "ah" sound at the beginning of Nadia is like when people say, "ooooh AHHHH" at fireworks. 

 

Or when the dentist says "Open up and say AH.

I knew a Nadia. She was from former Yugoslavia. It's pronounced Nah-dee-uh. So more for the "Nod" and not so much for the "Nad".

There's a longer AH sound than the word "Nod" allows. I think that's what the first poster means, OP. More Nah-dee-uh than Nod-ee-uh.

I've only ever heard it said like Nah-dee-ya. (From your example, like Nod, as in nod off).

As in "nachos."  I have a cousin Nadia and we say it in Spanish: Nah-thee-ah.

This is the Slavic pronunciation.  I've heard it other ways but I prefer Nahd-ya

One of my best friends is Nadia & I pretty much say Nodia straight up. No Nahhhdia & definitely not Nad (as in natural). Other friends & family pronounce her name the way I do. Hope that helps:)
