Only eating on one side + pumping

My LO will only eat on my right side, ever. I try the left side every time but he'll never latch! When I talked to the LC about it she told me to just keep offering it to him and hopefully he'll start taking it. That was a week ago and nothing has changed.

I've been having to pump it to stay from being engorged. Should I pump the left side every time he eats so my supply stays up if he ever decides to eat on that side? And should I not pump the right side after he's done since that's the only side he's getting milk from? What would you do in this situation?

Re: Only eating on one side + pumping

  • Neither of my kids ever ate from both sides with the exception of the 6 week growth spurt.  DS2 is almost 1 and is still a one side guy.  I would guess he will just eat one side from now on.  I would pump to relieve yourself, but only a little so you can regulate your supply without getting clogs if you have been doing the extra pumping for awhile.  Use a hair band to keep track of what side you are on.

  • If he is only going to be eating on one side, if I were you I would pump both sides after nursing him.  That way your supply increases on the side he eats on and you get some freezer storage.

I'd pump the left and not the right. But if he STILL doesn't take the left after a while, I'd pump the right to keep the supply up, and slowly stop pumping the left.
