I know I post here often, I usually lurk. I am just so annoyed about this whole situation. I guess technically it could be my fault. Here's the gist: I have followed my OB through 2 other practices before I was pregnant. I loved her so much and wanted her to deliver my babies. Well the practice she is at now delivers at a hospital a little far from me and one without the best reputation for being clean or new. I had my tonsils out there like a hundred years ago and don't remember a bad experience, so I said I would suck it up. On Wednesday, I felt really dizzy and the office sent me to the hospital. Worst experience I could imagine. I went to labor and delivery where I was greeted with creepy, dark dingy halls and a less than enthusiastic nursing staff. They brought me to a room and hooked the baby up and all was well with her. No one really told me what they were going to do so I was just waiting. The nurse seemed super flaky.
Finally she came in to hook me up to an IV and take blood. I have fairly translucent skin and have never had a problem getting IV or giving blood. She stuck me and was telling me how she couldn't get like any blood to come out, told my DH to help her find something in her basket of needles and stuff. Then hooked up the IV and it burned like a mother. So another nurse, not much brighter, came in and started an IV on my other hand. The other nurse took my IV out and blood was squirting everywhere.
Woah this is getting long. Long story long, they forgot about me in there, never checked my IV bag, never came in when the monitor alarm went off, and when she took my IV needle out, she was standing talking to me and put her hand up on the IV stand and shot blood into my face. Then dropped my band aid on the floor and proceeded to put it on my wound.
Turns out nothing was really wrong with me and I am still dizzy. I was so appalled at this experience I am switching practices in general so I can go to a local hospital. What a nightmare!!! And no, there is no point to my post, other than I cannot believe I never thought to tour the hospital earlier on in my pregnancy.
If you made it through this you deserve an award!!
Re: Having to switch practices at 28 weeks (VERY long)
Make a pregnancy ticker
I feel your pain when it comes to switching and being so far along. I just recently moved to Sacramento. I receive my medical care through the military and can only be seen at a military treatment facility. The closest one that has OB care is about an hour away and just not realistic. That means if something suddenly happens I would have to drive an hour to be seen. I have the option of going to an emergency room near by but I would be charged in full and money is a little tight now. Luckily, I just recently found out that I can get free prenatal care through Veterans Affairs since I served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now I am looking to switch again. I'm happy that I can get local care but switching after getting used to two other docs is such a hassle.
I hope you find a place that suits your needs.
What a crappy experience! I'm so sorry. I don't blame you one bit. I actually switched doctors when I first found out I was pregnant because I hated the hospital she delivered in. It's unfortunate that you have to leave an OB you love, but you will find another great doctor in a hospital that will better meet you and your baby's needs.
I had a friend switch practices because of the hospital at 32 weeks. After dealing with all the paperwork, she ended up loving her new hospital and was thrilled with her decision.
Good luck!
What a horrid experience! I would switch too, and I would also report them (not sure to whom) and would try to speak with the hospital supervisor. Not acceptable. As far as your medical records, they can't withhold them from your new practice as far as I know.
That's too bad that you had to switch because of the hospital! Sounds like a bad hospital though.
About the dizziness -- a couple months ago I had bad dizziness and went to labor & delivery as well. They sent me to an ER doctor who said I had vertigo and it was nothing related to the baby or pregnancy. He gave me some medication.(which my OB said was safe to take). I took it for a few days and I'm not sure if it helped much, but one night I got a massage and my masseuse said sometimes vertigo is caused by the misalignment of the top two vertebrae. She worked a lot on my neck and shoulders (which were very tight) and the next day the vertigo was gone. So anyway, that's at least what helped my dizziness!
