Babies: 3 - 6 Months

SLEEP

My four month old gets swaddled at night and for most naps because he pulls at his hair and rubs his face. Even with mittens on his hands it still upsets him and he cant seem to fall asleep. He usually bursts into tears. But now he is learning to roll over onto his tummy and I'm worried that if he is swaddled it will be really unsafe.

What do i do?!

Re: SLEEP

  • Once they can start rolling, it usually is unsafe to continue swaddling. I know a lot of ladies on this board have had success with something called the Magic Sleepsuit. I haven't personally used it, but it does act as a kind of "transition" to help babies who like to be swaddled go to being unswaddled.

  • Once DS started rolling we went from swaddled arms to unswaddled arms but still swaddling his chest in his sleepsack. He transitioned pretty well.

  • My 4-month old is still swaddled, but I know some moms have had success by starting by swaddling with one arm out for a while.

I was confused by the fact that you have a four month old and are also almost 29 weeks pregnant.  Then I looked at your blog.  You are one brave lady!

  • It is unsafe to continue swaddling once he can roll over, so it's time to stop.  It might take a bit of time for him to adjust, which is why we weaned gradually, doing only one arm out at a time.  And we switch him to a sleepsack, specifically the Halo ones, and I think that helped a lot.  It provided just a bit of containment, but his arms were still free to assist when he rolled, and it kept him warm all night.
