Projectile vomit vs spitting up

Can someone describe the difference? Tia

Re: Projectile vomit vs spitting up

  • In my experience, vomiting is explosive and there is a lot of puke that comes out. You can also feel their body retch and get stiff. Spit up is more calm and there can be a lot but it's not accompanied with the heaving of throwing up. Sometimes I don't even hear that she spit up, I just find it on my shirt. I KNOW when she vomits.

  • ohmygosh, you would totally know the difference between the two.  my 1st baby had projectile and let me tell you, it looks like the movie the exorsism with linda blair:) when she vomits!  it's a lot more than spit up and much more forcefull. spit up just sort of oozes out of their mouth, doesn't shoot out like a fire hydrant!

If your baby suddenly seems to be throwing up with extreme force-there is a medical problem called pyloric stenosis that shows up when babies are about 3-5 weeks old- so call your Dr. if you are worried about it.

  • I think when you get a projectile vomit all over you or your couch, bed etc, YOU KNOW the difference. Spit up doesn't require an immediate shower :)

  • i asked the dr. this and they said that it's hard to tell the difference sometimes. i find that usually it smells like vomit. unfortunately our lo has really bad reflux and he has forceful spit up. so i would say smell it!
