Help picking out new dishes?

I am having a bear of a time trying to find new dishes and I'm hoping you lovely ladies might have some good suggestions. Our current dishes were a Martha Stewart K-mart purchase about 4 years ago.  They are now so chipped, cracked and/or broken that I have to buy new dishes ASAP.

I am looking for sturdy dishes that are less likely to chip.  I've always liked the more substantial look and feel of stoneware.  I'm not a fan of very thin dishes so Corelle is out (plus my Grandma's Corelle exploded in her microwave...) and DH can't stand square dishes.  I love that Fiesta has a 5 year no-chip guarantee, but the style may be too Deco to go with our more traditional/colonial/global decor style.

I am living in Germany, so I am doing a lot of my browsing on-line.  I do plan to hit up a few German stores when DH gets back from the latest business trip.  This is shopping best done without two little ones in tow!

Can anyone suggest a good brand that should be fairly sturdy and might fit what I'm looking for?  I just want something that will last!

  • I love my Fiesta Ware.  I registered for it and have been using it for 5 years.  They have a variety of colors but we chose pure white and love the set.  So heavy duty that I never worry about them while using on my granite countertops.

  • We (and my ILs actually) have glass dishes from BB&B. They're $1 a piece for bowls and salad plates, and $1.50 for the  dinner plates, and they hold up amazingly well! My ILs have had them for over 10 years and we bought our set 5 years ago. I was originally thinking that it would be our outdoor eating set, but they're so light and easy to use and cute enough, and durable (the girls both use them w/ no problems) that they have become our everyday set. Our "nice" wedding everyday dishes haven't been used in years! We've only had 1 broken dish from DD1 throwing it across the room, all the others are chip free and in great condition. DD1 throws things a lot, so that tells you a lot ;)

Of course I'm looking and I can't find them on their website, which doesn't help you at all. Sorry :(  I'll keep searching and see if I can find them.

  • I have Mikasa everyday dishes as well. I've had them for almost 8 years. I only have one small chip in a dinner plate (and that is my fault). I bought an extra box (4 servings in a box), and have only had to take out one coffee cup and saucer (I broke those! LOL!)

    GL in your search!

  • I'm sure there are German manufacturers of dinnerware. I think it would be really neat to find something there!

Oh, there are - and I would love to find something neat here, but what I've seen so far is too expensive or too cheap.  (And by too cheap, I mean wouldn't hold up.)

I think tomorrow is a shopping Sunday (the stores here are usually closed on Sundays) so I might be able to get out and do a little looking.

But I'm also liking the idea of white Fiesta dishes.  Now wondering if someone sells them here...  :)

  • My everyday dishes are Pottery Barn (https://www.potterybarn.com/products/sausalito-dinnerware-celery/?pkey=cdinnerware-solid) and I love them. They are fantastic quality and I can always find pieces on sale to fill in what I didn't get when we got married.

Do you have Ikea in near you? I have these (https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60057098) and no complaints so far. They are really inexpensive so I don't worry about something getting broken.

  • I just bought (and love) Noritake Colorwave in chocolate square (but they come in round too). My SIL recommended them and she's had hers about 2 yrs and so far only has broken 1 cup. (her fault).

I also have Noritake china that is my formal dinnerware and I love that too. My MIL and I have the same pattern an she's had hers for nearly 30 yrs!

  • We have Pfaltzgraff (yorktowne). We've gotten ours as hand-downs from the ILs. they had had them for a long time (they actually still have over half the set- we have enough for our family). They hold up very well. my kids have droped them more than once. I don't worry about letting any of the kids use them. We have 1 plate that has a small chip on the underside of the lip- I haven't heard of one actually breaking.
