Baby Names

How do you find the number...

How do you find the number of babies named a certain name?  If I go to ssa.gov, it just allows me to search the top 1000 names (unless I'm missing something).  The name we're giving our son isn't in the top 1000, but I still want to know the number of people given that name last year.

Any ideas?  I've seen people post the information, so i know it's out there - I just don't know how to access it!

  • SSA lets you download the "beyond the top 1,000" names here. It is a big zip file containing 130 plain text lists with about 30,000 names in each. They list the girls first (name and # of babies), then the boys. To find a name, you just open the file and use the "find" tool. The lists have all the names that had 5 or more uses in a given year.

It's kind of a pain, but once you have the files, they are hours and hours of fun ? if you are a dork like me.

Or, you could just post the name and I'll look it up for you Smile

Ahhhh that makes sense... no wonder I couldn't find it!  I'm too lazy to download the file... the name is Lucius.

    Thanks!  :)

  • Lucius:

    2009: 127

    2005: 109

    2000: 28

So, it seems to be on a bit of an upswing (thank Harry Potter?), but is still well out of the top 1,000.

    Similar names in 2009:

    Lucian: 422

    Luciano: 374

    Lucien: 147

    Lucio: 87

    Lucious: 25

Lucifer: 9 (note: I don't really think Lucifer is similar, I just thought it was funny that there were 9 of them)
