Speaking in the 3rd person....

DS mostly still talks about himself in the 3rd person (i.e. "B wants peanut butter and jelly", "B's hungry", etc.).  If we ask him "How do you say it?", he will switch to "I" and "my" but his default seems to be 3rd person.   Should he be grown out of this by now?  His speech is fantastic and he tells whole stories, etc. so there's nothing else speech-wise that seems out of the ordinary.  I just didn't know if this is a concept he should understand by now.  I'm not really worried about it, just curious.

 TIA!

  • I totally remember DS going through this stage, but I forget how old he was... maybe the same as your DS.  It didn't last long - maybe a few months?   It's been a while and he's 4 now.  DH thought he did it because we (mostly I) referred to ourselves in the 3rd person all the time "Mommy wants a hug" "Mommy would like you to come here"  "Mommy loves you" etc.- - but I don't think that's it.  In any case, he eventually stopped doing it.

  • I think everyone goes through this stage, I remember doing it myself.  I dont remember how old I was or when I got over it, and my DS isnt old enough to be at that stage yet.  But he will get over it.

  • DS1 did this.  TBH, I thought it was cute and figured he would grow out of it.  But (late 2s or early 3s) his preschool was concerned about it, so we made an effort to correct him and never talk in 3rd person ourselves.  We realized that we talked to him in 3rd person a lot more than we thought and it took US awhile to break the habit lol.  Now he rarely does it.
