Sutton for a girl?

Mornin' ladies!

What do you think of the FN Sutton for a girl?  I tend to like names on the preppier side (& ones that aren't as common), so when I saw this yesterday it appealed to me quite a bit.  I mentioned it to DH & he really likes it (said it could be "The One"!), but now I have a couple of (possible) reservations:

1.  Since this name is unisex/somewhat masculine, do you think we HAVE to pair it with a very feminine MN?  We'd really like to honor MIL by using her maiden name as the MN, but I'm not sure how well this would work together for a little girl...

2.  Would you be concerned about the NN situation?  More specifically, that this doesn't lend itself to any good NNs (though DH likes "Sutt"...ugh) & there's definitely some potential for teasing there (if you don't catch my drift, I'm thinking of how you could easily add an "L" between the S & the U...).

DH & I have had SUCH trouble coming up with a name that we both like.  And we both do like this one!  But now I'm going back & forth on it, & I think he's already frustrated that I was the one who mentioned it & now I'm not so sure...

Errrgh.

Any input or other name suggestions would be appreciated...thank you & have a lovely Friday!  :)

Re: Sutton for a girl?

  • I think it would be fine as a middle name, but its just not a very pretty name at all, and definitely not feminine or unisex at all. I wouldn't give it to any child as a first name, regardless of sex. I suggest you relegate it to mn status and find a different first name.

  • The only Sutton I have ever known was one of the biggest (male) jocks in my high school.

    I definitely don't see it as a male --> female cross-over name.

  • Yep, I can see a teenager adding an L to her name. Yep, it is not a unisex name, it is a surname and masculine at that. I do not consider it to be unique at all, trendy - you are following the surname trend.

Do you have to pair it with a feminine middle name - no, but I would not pair it with another surname.

  • Would your MIL's maiden name not fit the description of what you're looking for in a name? Sutton is a last name, so it's strange to me to give it to a child when you don't have a connection to it.

  • I thought "Slutton" before I even opened the post.

I agree w/ pp ? if you want a ln-as-fn for your daughter, can you use MIL's name?

If you like Sutton, you might also like Sloane.

  • I love it for a boy, and hate it for a girl. Why is it when some mothers have girls they choose a very masculine boy name ? Would you name your gorgeous little boy Sheila, Emma, Grace, or Isabella ?? Seriously, get over the masculine trend for a girl it's awful and you will get the side eye ! Sleep

  • Hmmm.  I guess I didn't really think of it as a last name because I don't know anyone personally with that LN.  There's a broadway actress named Sutton Foster, & I liked that sound/image in my mind for a girl.

I definitely don't feel the need to be totally unique with a name (no weird, one-off, made-up words or spellings here!), but want something you're not going to run across every day.

My MIL's maiden name is Everett, which I actually find even more masculine (maybe because it's so well-known as a male name), so I wouldn't use it as a FN for a girl (though I would for a boy).

I will definitely take your comments into consideration!

I actually do like Sloane!  Unfortunately, it rhymes with our LN.  :(

I've posted this on here before, but my personal favorite for her name is Wren.  I also like Amelie.  DH's favorite is Whitley.

If you have any other suggestions based on these names it would be really helpful!  Thank you again for all of your great input!  :)

  • I agree with the previous posters, it would not be my choice for a girl's name. As an adult I would not like for this to be my name. I do like the suggestion of Sloane though!!

I would go with Amelie, Amelie Everett has a nice ring to it and it is a very pretty name for a little girl.

  • Have you ever tried nymbler?  It's a website you put your LO's names or names that you like in and it gives you suggestions for other names.

I'm not a fan of Sutton - I could see kids calling her Slutton as others have mentioned too.

  • I'm not a fan either. It is way masculine and it won't be long before some mean little kid adds an 'l' to it. 'Slutton' is going to be a nickname for sure.

  • I would not name a little girl Sutton.  I probably would not even honor my MILs maiden name if it is typically used for a little boy's first name.  Of your suggestions I like Whitney for a little girl.

Here are a few more suggestions:

    Meredith

    Lauren

    Courtney

    Charlotte

    Blair

Of your suggestions I like Whitney for a little girl.

When we first started talking about this, I asked DH about Whitney & he said "no".  He specifically likes WhitLey.  (I prefer WhitNey, as well.)

Thank you for your other suggestions!

I'm on Nymbler now & it has good ideas, too.  But I feel like the same handful of names keep on coming up over & over again...they're beautiful, but I don't want LO to be the "27th Jennifer".  It would be a double-whammy since our LN is EXTREMELY common.

    This is so freakin' hard...

  • I don't normally love masculine names like this for girls, but I love these one. It's my guilty pleasure name. It might be because Sutton Foster is from my hometown and we had friends in common, so I've been aware of her for years. If I could have gotten DH on board, this might have been my girl name. It was definitely on my long list.

ITA- I don't mind surnames for  first names when you have a connection to said name. My DD's name is a last name. It's a culturally Southern thing to do, so I'm used to it. However, I hate the name Sutton. It makes me think of skinning catfish and all the dirty nasty things about living down here. I reckon that's because the only Suttons I know have catfish farms and I don't particularly like them.

And besides my biased dislike of the name, how can you possibly get past SLUTTON???

  • OH! I just saw you're in Bonifay. I spent some time there when my brother was at a rehab program that was on a farm. Yeah, the name Sutton might fly down there. I still don't like it, though. There are better last names to pick from.

I like Wren and Amelie! Use those! Whitley sounds made-up. Not that it's beyond some folks to go making up names, but it does have a tacky feel. I'd stick with Whitney.

Too funny!  This is such a small town...ever since we moved down here last year, people are always asking us what in the heck we're doing here (answer:  DH's family is from around here & we're actually living in the home his grandfather built...the one with the LN we want to use as a MN!).  I'm surprised anyone else has even heard of it!   :)

I'm from suburban NJ (outside of Princeton), so I guess I think of the name in a different context.  But it helps to think of where we are now & how it might go over down here, too.  Good point.  Thank you!

  • Sutton is a male's name 100%. I can't see it being a cross-over name in any aspect - even with Elizabeth as a middle name! As far as nns go, let's just hope she has a sweet disposition, otherwise her nickname will be Satan.

  • i like sutton, but do think it will probably become slutton at some point.

whitley seems like a real name to me because there was totally a character on the cosby show spin-off a different world with that name.  she was the fancy, preppy girl.

  • I know an adorable little girl named Sutton. I think it's a very preppy name and it works well for a girl or boy. But I also like Logan and Sloane for a girl..I really like unisex names. :)
  • i don't like sutton for a girl or a boy.
  • I know two Suttons, both female. I love the name on both of them.

That said, it's a family name for both of them.  I can't get on board with Sutton (for either gender) unless it's a family name.

I think Amelie Everett is absolutely gorgeous.  Everett is my daughter's MN (it's my MIL's maiden name) and we briefly considered it as a first name, but decided on something more traditional instead.

  • Thank you again for your opinions!

I really have no idea of how the actress got her name.  Of course it'd be a lot more meaningful if it was a family name, but it didn't strike me as such an obvious surname (not like Johnson or Smith, for example) that it might be considered "off limits" as a FN.  I always find it so interesting to see other peoples' perspectives on these sorts of things!

I just feel bad that DH & I finally sorta saw eye-to-eye on this one, a name that I brought up, & now I'm having serious doubts.  At least we still have time on our side!

scoutkate:  What a coincidence about our MILs both being Everetts!  I really do love it as a MN (it was my idea, not DH's!), but agree that it's a bit much as a FN.  And Elizabeth is such a classic...good job.  :)

  • I do not like this name for either a boy or girl.  I think it can easily be a play on words and I could see kids having a lot of fun with it (as in making fun of the name).  I wouldn't envy someone with this name one bit.  If you really wanted to use it, a MN would be better.

  • I don't like it for a boy or a girl.  I think it's terrible for a girl and definitely has teasing potential.

  • This name is extremely hideous. I do not understand how it's become a name to use, or how a girl could ever pull it off. It sounds like a pig's name. It is my most hated name in history, even more than "heaven spelled backwards".

You run the risk that with a name like this your daughter will hate it, since it is more of a boys name and not very pretty. I would keep looking, but in the end you guys are the one's that have to live with it. How does the rest of your family feel about the name?

Logan is NOT a unisex name. It is a boy name. Period.

Sloane is NOT a unisex name. It is a girl name. Period.

Just because some idiots out there use cross-gender names on their kids does not automatically relegate the names to "unisex" status.

  • Sutton is my maiden name and we were considering it if we had a boy. I can see it for a girl too. I did occasionally hear slutton as a teenager but no biggie. Who didn't get some kind of off handed comment as a teenager. I would pair it with a feminine middle name though. I like the family significance.
