Advice needed- unlatching numerous times during BF'ing!

Anybody elses LO start doing this??

He's unlatching himself every few seconds for about the first 5 minutes or so of BF'ing, but he's so hungry that he dives right back in. Problem is, he can't latch by himself (correctly!), so we always have to stop, reposition, relatch, and it takes so much time & leaves me with a frustrated baby and mama!

How do you know if you have an overactive letdown and thats the problem?

Between that and his hands flying everywhere, I want a baby straight-jacket for BF'ing.. :(

  • Sounds like LO doesn't like the flow that much. That used to happen with us and I pumped just a little bit (1-2oz) before feeding and it seemed to help. It is very frustrating when they are all over the place, but eventually it gets better and easier so hang in there!

  • Ditto pp and if he still does it, maybe he needs to burp?  That's what DS does when he drinks too much too fast - keeps pulling off.  My LC @ the hospital even said it's a good idea to try and burp him b4 he eats to make sure he doesn't already have a gas bubble in there that will interrupt his meal. Smile   Oh, and when DS was younger & couldn't keep his hands under control, I'd swaddle him to eat - much easier!

  • Switching to the football hold usually helps me when my LO is repeatedly unlatching- the lactation consultant in the hospital suggested it and it's worked pretty well for us.

  • I don't have any advice, just wanted to say that my daughter is EXACTLY the same way.  We've started using nipple shields and for whatever reason she'll stay latched onto those.
