Using tylenol and ibuprofen?

Does anyone know the hours between switching using them? I thought it was two but I want to double check. DD has a high fever which isn't coming down with tylenol alone. She had her pneumonia shot today and it is causing a really high fever (103). TIA!

Re: Using tylenol and ibuprofen?

  • If call your pediatricians office. They should have an on-call dr. Our pediatrician told us not to alternate, so if double check that yours is ok and get the official time frame. Good luck and I hope your little one's fever drops soon and you are all able to get some good rest!

  • My pediatrician says every 3 hours to alternate.  The two do not overlap or interact, according to her.

    Alternating Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen

If instructed by your healthcare provider to alternate ibuprofen and acetaminophen, do it as follows:

    • Alternate doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen every 4 hours (not every 3 hours).
    • Alternate medicines for only 24 hours or less, then return to giving a single product.

Alternating acetaminophen and ibuprofen is generally not recommended. It can be confusing and lead to dosage errors and poisoning.

  • I think the key is that Tylenol is every 4 hours and Motrin is every 6.  So you just have to make sure youi're not giving either of them too often.   I don't think you need to wait between one and the other though.

But if you have a fever that won't come down - especially that high - call your ped.

  • My doctor told me every 4 hours when alternating between the two.  However if the fever doesn't drop a couple hours after the first dose I'd probably call.  But I'm nervous like that.
