Cost of D&C

I think I have decided to have a D&C because I can't handle the waiting anymore for a natural m/c. But . . . I am a little worried about the cost. I tried to get an estimate from the hospital but they haven't given me anything. I talked with my insurance company and they said they would cover 85% if the procedure was "medically necessary". I am going to check with my doctor on this.

For those of you that have had a D&C, do you know what the total cost was (before insurance . . . total bills from the hospital)?

Thank you for sharing! We just can't afford to spend thousands of dollars right now . . . this may change my decision.

I'm sorry for your loss.  I had a D&C in Dec, and I *think* it was somewhere in the ballpark of 8K.  We got a bunch of different bills afterwards and I tried to add it together, but I wasn't exactly in a sane state of mind so I may have missed some.

I had a D&C in September in Oklahoma. I was pregnant with twins and one of them was eptopic. The total on the bill I got was $22,000 before insurance. After the provider adjustment, the total paid to the hospital by both us and insurance was just over $6,000. I am not sure though if the cost increased because I was pregnant with twins or because one of the twins was in the opening of my fallopian tube. I hope this gives you an idea, but it might be a little bit high.

I am so sorry for your loss.

My hospital fees(Indiana) were 4,796.56. Doctor fees for the surgery were 2,398.67. 

I completely understand needing the D&C. I went for 2ws waiting to miscarry and thought I was going to loose my mind. Getting the D&C done really helped me to gain, some, peace and closure. Helping us to begin moving on with our lives.

My d&c was around $12,000, but that included an er visit that was maybe 4 grand on it's own...

Your doctors office should be able to work with you insurance and get you an estimate before the procedure. It varies greatly by insurance. Since my D&C was done as an out patient surgery at a surgery center the insurance covered all of it, we just have to pay a portion of the anesthesiologist bill (which I havent gotten yet).

My hospital portion was $4,600. I do not know if my Dr bills as well, I have not seen that in the mail yet/on insurance claims. My insurance paid the whole thing because my Dr. deemed it medically necessary in order to be sure we could test the tissue since I had a prior loss, and the fact that I had not started bleeding yet and he did not want me to wait it out.

I had one today and honestly didn't think about if my insurance covered it. I know out was pre approved but I would have never thought it was something that wouldn't be covered. I'm praying it is covered. I don't need another thing to worry about. Anyone know of tricare covers a d and c I would call the hospital directly because ever y hospital has its own charge master and different rates for various insurance companies. They may also be able to get you in touch with the anesthesia group to get their rates.

My natural m/c where I was at the hospital for only 5 hours was $8k. I'm guessing a D&C would be around $12-15K.

I am so sorry you are going through this. Before my insurance company paid, the bills were $8000 from the hospital, $1200 for anesthesia, $800 from the doctor, and $150 for lab work. (I am in Michigan).

Here is *BEFORE* insurance:

Labwork $136.95

Anesthesiologist  $1365.00

Hospital (ER)  $11,151.04

Dr (OB/Gyn)  $1,025.00

Dr (ER)  $1,053.00

 TOTAL = $14,730.99

 

Labwork and Dr (ER) were covered 100% under insurance.

Actually paid (so far):

Dr (OB/Gyn) $308.88

Hospital $200 (ER Co-pay, I should not receive another bill from them because their bill to me was the $200)

 *Should get a bill from Anesthesiologist for $273.00

Total should be = $781.88 but only paid $508.88 so far.  

D&C was 11/14/10 and I didn't get the bill from the hospital until 3/1/11.

Thank you everyone for sharing. I decided to go ahead with a D&C and I think that I am feeling better for it. I'm still recovering and still feeling terribly sad and depressed but knowing that the physical part of the miscarriage is over is really helping me heal emotionally. I have a long way to go but I feel like I can see a light now at the end of the tunnel . . . this was the right choice for me.

I haven't gotten my bills yet but I did get an estimate from the hospital for their portion (5000). That does not include my doctor or the anesthesiologist. From what you all have shared, I'm guessing that the total will be around 7000 and that my portion (15%) will be somewhere around 1000.
