Nurseries and Baby Gear

what are you putting above your changing table/Dresser?

what are you putting above your changing table or dresser?

I have everything very figured out for the nursery except for this part.  Anyone putting a mirror above the dresser?  I just feel like there is this huge blank spot staring at me....

A mirror is the only thing i can really think of....just looking curious to see what everyone else is doing!

Show me some pictures and/or links if you can!  Thanks in advance!

Re: what are you putting above your changing table/Dresser?

  • Just throwing this out there - I had to take down the art I had above her changing table around 10 months old...she grabbed for it EVERY time she was on the table and several times got solid holds on the frames to the point where I thought she was going to pull it off the wall.  So if I had to do it again I'd do a stencil/decal or nothing, since now I have a nail hole and no art.

  • nothing above changing table - -not safe could fall on baby.  However, above dresser I have two canvas pictures that match the bedding.

  • We have 2 pictures of us, 1 of each of us holding our LO when she was 3 days old. The photos are high above the changing table and secured to the wall with anchors.

Above the dresser will be a mirror but I am still in the process of refinishing it. (its an antique dresser that has an oval mirror that attaches to the dresser)

DD's window is above her changing table.  She tries to play with the blinds (she can barely reach) and she is only 7 months old.  I'd put something high or nothing.

  • We have our wall letters that take up the entire length of the changing table/dresser. I'm a big advocate of having nothing over the crib, but the changing table is not the same IMO. He will never be out of arm's reach and will literally have my hands on him the entire time. The letters are nailed into the wall securely and out of curious hands' reach.

  • We're hanging the quilt that came with the bedding set on the wall above changing table.  I stitched loops on to the back and we'll hang it on a rod.  I'm aware that he may pull at it or touch it when he's big enough.  He won't be able to pull it off, but he may reach for it.  Luckily, it won't hurt him since it's fabric, and it's washable, but if he pulls at it a lot, I'll probably take it down at that point.

  • I'm putting a quote on the wall above the changing table, and I'm going to hang some wall art that matches the theme above the dresser.

  • We put a vinyl decal with her name above the changing table/dresser.
  • We have a shelf above the changing dresser that holds baskets of diapering items, burp clothes, lotions, etc.  It is really secured on the wall, so I am not worried about it falling.  We also have a mirror up on the wall and a decal.  I have pics in my blog if you want to see it

  • We were thinking about putting floating shelves above the changing table, but a little concerned about them falling.  I told my husband that if he's not 100% they are secure we should come up with a different idea.  He's very handy around the house and said he can do very secure anchors for them.

  • Well, I don't have a pic anywhere on the internet and I'm assuming you can't upload the photo (or I don't know how!).

We made a 3 canvas artwork with stripes in the background (green/blue that match the room) and added then painted his name in dark brown.  Each canvas is 18x24, so it fills up the wall nicely.  It is very lightweight and can easily be taken down if it becomes a hazard.

The inspiration came from here:  https://projectnursery.com/2009/05/a-custom-canvas/

  • We're going to put up a French memo board to hang family pictures on.  We do not live near our families so it'll be a fun way to teach LO who is who.  Based on pp's replies, I'll hang it a little higher than originally planned!

  • If we don't go with a hutch, we'll probably do some type of wall art or shelves. To be honest, I don't plan on actually using the changing pad on top of the dresser all that often to change the baby, so I'm not too worried.

  • We'll be doing a vinyl wall decal so I don't have to worry about it falling/LO grabbing it!

  • We have a french memo board with photos and her birth announcement, etc...

My DD1 is now potty trained but we still sit her up there sometimes and she loves looking at the photos. We rotate the photos and talk about who is in them.

DD 2 is 8 months and she is now getting really interested in the photos.

  • Shelves- the room is only 8x8 and has one wall that is completely useless (all windows) so storage is key for us. I love the light in our house but the 50's window placement seems odd to me- they are all short windows placed 2/3 of the way up the wall: 5 in our master bedroom (an entire wall), 4 in the guest room (2 on each wall to make a corner window) and 3 in the nursery (again entire wall). Why so many short windows?
  • We have mirrors above the changing table so LO can look at himself while we're changing him. They are secured into the wall and are similar to these:

The only difference is that they're squiggly on the sides...still from Ikea, but I couldn't find it online.

  • I have 4 8X10 paintings I made for LO.  He's 21 mos now and he's only reached for them when he is standing and I am holding him. He points to the animals and either says their names or makes the sounds.  They have never fallen.
