Anyone successfully stop taking Unisom?

I have been on the 1/2 unisom/B6 combo at night since about 9 weeks. I have tried to stop taking the Unisom with no success.  I feel queasy and can't sleep worth anything when I do.  Anyone else take unisom for m/s and end up successfully stopping??

Re: Anyone successfully stop taking Unisom?

  • Good question! I take a unisom every night and have been thinking about trying to cut back to a half and then off entirely. Thanks for asking, hopefully you get some good answers!

  • Still on it. I'm afraid of what would happen if I stop. Mainly afraid of not sleeping well though, not the sickness. I figure since it's okayed to use, I'm going to just stick with it.

  • I stopped cold turkey. It wasn't really helping with my m/s and only helping me sleep. The first 2 nights I didn't sleep well but was fine after that. Good luck!

  • I went cold turkey. I did it on the weekend so I could feel crappy and laze around, by Monday I was sleeping fine. Once I was off I switched to Zofran though because I still wasn't keeping food down. I was throwing up daily until about 22 weeks.

  • I cut down to 1/2 a pill for a couple nights, then stopped.  It took a few nights to get used to it, which wasn't fun, but I am glad to not be taking it anymore.

Could you try substituting benedryl for the Unisom?  Even though benedryl is an allergy med, it's safe during pregnancy and often suggested as a sleep aid because of how drowsy it makes you.  And it's non-habit forming.  Might be worth a try...maybe it will knock you out and even if you're still feeling sick you won't notice it because you'll be asleep.

This.  Benedryl can actually help with m/s.  Some days it was the only thing that got me through my pregnancy with DS.

  • Well this is just plain benadryl packaged under a fancy name to get you to buy it, so you could gradually reduce the dose like, take 25 mg of benadryl tonight and see what happens. Then go to 12.5 mg in a few more nights. DiphenhydramineIs benadryl so just buy that and see if you can reduce doses and wean off it.
