Please help me understand why I no longer "feel pregnant" (5 weeks)

Hi,

I'm 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and driving myself crazy!  I don't have an OB/GYN yet, so I don't have a doctor to call to help me understand what's normal and what's not.  ( The OB I called won't schedule my initial appointment until week 8 and I think I'll drive myself nuts if I have to wait three more weeks!) So, I'm hoping to get some guidance from this board!

The problem is that the few pregnancy symptoms I was feeling suddenly disappeared two days ago and I've convinced myself that this means the pregnancy is no longer progressing.   So here's the story:

Today is Thursday, a week ago Saturday I was late for my period, which is typically a regular 28 day cycle.  I took a pregnancy test each day for the next  three or four days - they were all negative.  I was having some cramping and kept thinking my period was coming.  That was until Wednesday, when I had a positive pregnancy test.  I took about six more after that point because I couldn't believe it and they were all positive!  Over the next four or five days I noticed feeling VERY exhausted, my body felt warmer (I'm usually freezing all of the time) my breasts seemed more full and they were very tender.  I also started feeling much hungrier at different points during the day and was craving all iron-rich foods!

Then suddenly on Tuesday (week 5) all of the symptoms disappeared.  I am freezing again, my breasts feel exactly the same as before, I'm no longer tired and my hunger is back to normal.  I know that people say pregnancy symptoms may go away - but I thought that happens later in the first trimester - not as early as 5 or 6 weeks.  I've heard that people end up having their first sonogram around 8 weeks to learn that the baby stopped developing around week 5 or 6.  Is is possible that that's what I'm experiencing, or would my body continue to have the pregnancy symptoms even if the baby didn't develop?  I haven't had bleeding at all.  I have felt a little bit of cramps but it's more of a pulling type feeling below my belly button - like I'm stretching or pulling a muscle (I'm hoping that's the uterus expansion, but I also doubt I would feel that during week 5.)  Is it possible that I might have had a miscarriage without any bleeding?  I've read a tiny bit about missed miscarriages and blighted ovum but I don't know enough about them to know if it's something one might lose pregnancy symptoms over?  Also, if I take another home pregnancy test now, would it still be positive even if the pregnancy isn't progressing?

I'm hoping someone could explain to me the medical processes of how these pregnancy symptoms might suddenly stop even if the pregnancy was progressing.  I know all pregnancies are experienced differently, and without cramping or bleeding everything is probably fine - but it's so difficult to deal with because I just don't "feel" pregnant anymore.  I just don't feel it anymore, I feel completely back to normal and I just hope I learn my lesson by getting hit with crazy morning sickness next week.  But, until then, thank you for addressing my neuroses!    I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences.  Thank you so much in advance!!

  • Symptoms come and go - that is just normal. Some people never have any symptoms (haven't you seen the "I didn't know I was pregnant" shows on TV?).

With a missed miscarriage people your body still thinks you are pregnant, so that wouldn't stop the symptoms.

Try to stop analyzing everything and just enjoy feeling good for now! Worry is like a rocking chair - it gives you something to do but it won't get you anywhere.

  • I stopped reading after the 2nd paragraph - because the appearance/disappearance of symptoms means absolutely nothing.  NOTHING.  There is no way to tell what is going on in your uterus except to LOOK in there.

Most symptoms are no fun - so if you had them you would be feeling bad and wishing they were gone.  So try to enjoy that you feel good right now and know the odds are on your side that everything is fine.

  • Just enjoy it!  You will feel pregnant soon enough and regret not taking advantage of this time!
  • What everyone else said.  Plus 8 weeks is still relatively early for a first appointment.  Some people don't have one until 10-12 weeks.

  • I had a bad freak out like yours around this time.  Everything is fine :)  There have been a couple of other points where symptoms would go away for a day or two, only to return later.  I did call my OB (sobbing like a crazy woman) and they let me go get an US.  It was very comforting to see the heartbeat and see that everything was fine.  You may want to call them and see if they'll let you do that.

  • Ok, thank you.  I will do my best to try to accept the idea that symptoms come and go.  I'm the type of person that always wants to understand the logic and reason for things and for whatever reason it's hard for me to wrap my head around symptoms disappearing.  But I'm going to keep your words in my head and try!! Thanks so much!

I noticed your daughter's name is Zoe and had to say that is my baby girl name that i have picked out. I love it!! Have you noticed a lot of mispronunciation since it doesn't have the 'y" at the end?

To the OP: I think possible miscarriage is a real fear for many women on this board - so know that you are not alone. However, as PP stated, it is not possible to tell what is going on in your uterus without looking in there. In the meantime, my advice is to relax and try to think positively. I don't know if you have a relationship with the Lord or not, but I do and I just pray for the health and safety of my baby and myself and then I give my worries to Him and try not to think of it any longer. God is the great physician and our Creator ~ who knows the needs of your baby better than Him? Fear tolerated is Faith contaminated! You should try to pray if you would like! It may give you peace, I know it has helped me. I hope you have a very healthy and happy 9 months!

We loved the name Zoe and most people do pronounce it correctly the first time. We've got a couple of people who think it rhymes with "Bo" and a couple who say it like "Zoa", which I've heard is a Hebrew pronunciation, but most people get it right :-)

This.  I'll be 11 weeks when I see my OB for the first time.

I had a lot of the same symptoms at 4 weeks (right around the time of my BFP) and then they suddenly disappeared for 2-3 days. I was slightly worried, until the symptoms came back with a vengeance at 5 weeks to the day- morning sickness and all! All I can say, is enjoy your symptom-free days, because chances are, more symptoms are right around the corner!

  • Symptoms come and go.  Yesterday I felt amazing.  Today I feel like crap.  Don't worry and enjoy being pregnant. Smile
  • All I'm saying is my BFF is 31 weeks pregnant.  31 WEEKS! She realized she was pregnant when she started feeling movement.  She has literally known she was pregnant for like 3 weeks.
