DD possibly allergic to strawberries

I know DD has had a taste of strawberries before, but she's never gotten into eating them. (Although she loves the strawberry yogurt cereal bars and other strawberry fruit bars.) Today I tried giving her fresh strawberries and when she put it in her mouth she said "hot" and spit it out. A short while later all around her mouth turned red and looked like she was broken out. Would you consider this an allergic reaction? Should I call her pedi to ask about it? I'm not urgently concerned about it since it was such a mild reaction and she acted fine, but if she were to ingest a larger amount of strawberries I'm concerned it could have a bigger reaction.

  • I would call and mention it.  I would also probably give her Benedryl just in case.  It never hurts and then you know you've "stopped" the reaction.

I would check in with your pediatrician first before trying any strawberries again. He may have his own procedures for doing another test run. Our pedi had us retry bananas during office hours only and it had to be an actual banana, nothing processed like banana puree.

From my own experience and also LO's, I have found that very small amounts of latex exposure never bothered us but when a much larger contact happened and triggered a strong reaction, the following contacts no matter how small or slight had reactions also, even if they hadn't bothered us before. It was like we had to have one semi-serious reaction to make the body realize it couldn't handle that allergen and get its response mechanisms jump-started. So I would definitely check in with the doctor before doing anything with strawberries or strawberry flavors.

ETA: And ditto to the Benadryl - if you don't know a dosage and your clinic has an after hours line I would call and ask for a dosage....

  • Dr. Sears also has the Benedryl dosage by weight if that's easier.  My kids are so tiny that I have to go by weight rather than age even as they've gotten older so I always look up dosage on Dr. Sears' website based on their most recent pedi visit weigh-in.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies. DD is already asleep, but I will follow up with her pedi tomorrow to see if he wants to do any tests or anything. For now I'll just make sure we avoid strawberries at home and at daycare.

  • DS had little bits of strawberries here and there, and then a few hours after ingesting a greater amount he ended up with a head to toe rash.  It was awful, like out of a science fiction movie.  It started on his face and every time I turned around it had spread somewhere else. We rushed him to the pedi (before I even realized it was from the strawberries), and she asked if he had tried any new foods.  Apparently even though he had sampled them before he was not prepared for a medley of strawberry products (puffs, mish-mash pouch and yogurt melts) all in one day.  Luckily that was the extent of his reaction; and I've been too nervous to try them again since.  Good luck with the pedi.
