We ended up using a 'leather' ottoman from Target for the family room. It has safety hinges just like a toy chest so it doesn't slam closed. It's working well for us so far.
This is what we did too. Also doubles as extra seating.
We have this one, and I hate it. it's so big and bulky and the two "drawers" aren't really drawers, they just slide under. The lid isn't very big and doesnt' attach.
To my boys: I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
Just chiming in that i hate the toybox and wish i hadnt gotten one. Little things collect in there so much, and its impossible to find stuff in bthe botton. Its a pretty jumbled way of storing stuff. I wish i had found attractive shelving with bins.
I love ours. It's from Land of Nod and it's part of the Storagpalooza collection. It looks nice in our living room, but would work well in a bedroom as well. You can also get multiple toy boxes or book shelves from the collection and stack them.
We have it in light honey, but will probably get it in blue for DS's room and keep our current one in the living room.
We could not find a toy box big enough that was worth the money so we ended up getting this.... It's an outside storage bin but it was the same price as the toy boxes and has alot more space.
All of my life I have been waiting for all you give to me
You
Re: toy box/toy chest
We have a cherry wood one like this:

I love it because it wont slam shut and when it is closed all the way it has open space so no smashed fingers
