Trouble TTC

Bromocriptime side effects

I just started Bromocriptime today to bring down my prolactin levels and hopefully start ovulating!!!  Has anyone taken this?  What side effects did you get and how long did it take to regulate your prolactin?  (Mine has been ranging between 35-40).

Thanks!!!

Re: Bromocriptime side effects

  • Hi, the only side effects I had were the first couple of nights it made me feel drunk! LOL.I was also taking Prometrium so IDK if that had anything to do w/ it or not. After taking it a couple of days it didn't phase me but I'd recommend taking it before bed. I started taking that Feb. 16 and went back to the doctor March 16 and had bloodwork done and got a call from the nurse saying my prolactin was still a little higher than he'd like them to be but just to continue taking the bromocriptine. Hope this helps :)

  • I started taking Bromocriptine in November and felt quite ill for the first week or so.  Very dizzy and sick to my stomach in fact I took a couple of days of work.  My dosage was increased every 3 days for the first 9 days.  I went for repeat b/w after being on it for 1 month and my levels were within the normal range.  I was told by my RE that I will have to keep taking it until I get pregnant and then will be reduced off of it again and then I will have my levels tested again when we want to try for another pregnancy.  Apparently elevated levels are fine unless you are TTCing.

  • I worked my way up to the full dosage.  I was fine until I started the full amount...the first week was bad!  I was extremely tired and my stomach bothered me.  It slowly got better and after a while I couldn't feel anything at all!  My levels were at 60 when I started.

    Good luck!

  • I hated bromocriptine!!! It gave me headaches and terrible terrible sinus congestion. I couldn't breath out of my nose at all.  My levels were around 40 when I started, and I think it went down to normal within a month. The RE switched me to cabergoline once a week, and that has kept my levels normal for a year. Hopefully I get KU soon and can stop taking it for a while.

  • I have been on bromocriptine for quite a bit now and my only real s/e is drowsiness.  I take it at night so it doesn't bother me.  I was on cabergoline prior to this and had more s/e than on this one (stuffiness extreme drowsiness, etc).  It took about 6 weeks for my levels to become regulated on the bromocriptine.

  • I only had the nose stuffiness.  I took it before bed and tried to fall asleep about 30 minutes after the pill.  I didn't have any other side effects.  I believe my dr had me take it vaginally for the first couple of days and then switch over to oral.

ETA: oh yea-and it only took a month for my levels to be in "normal range".

  • Weird! I noticed some of the posters saying they had nose stuffiness/sinus problems w/ it. So did I! BUT I didn't know if it was that or not because like I said, I was taking it w/ Prometrium and the next time I took Prometrium I had the stuffiness too so I just thought that was what was doing it.
