BF/pumping working mamas

I need some advice. My schedule is real funky... I work 3 nights/week 7p-730a. I returned to work last week. So before hand I was pumping 4x/day 8am, 1230p, 5p, 10p. I never had clogs or felt overly full/uncomfortable unless I missed a session or was late. I talked to a LC and she said that because I am off more than I work I should just keep my current schedule. So I did. First night I came home extremely uncomfortable. So the second night I decided I would do a quick pump at about 3a just to relieve pressure, not a long pump. I still came home really engorged and uncomfortable, Every since then, each time it's close to time to pump my left boob is really tender and lumpy. I pump and massage and it's fine after.

Would you pump more at work? I already have an oversupply (50-60oz/day) I do not want to signal my body to make more, but I don't want to end up with mastitis (again). WWYD???

  • I would pump enough to relieve the pressure and pain but stop before I was empty.  Eventually your supply will even out.  Good Luck!

  • Do you still nurse your LO between the 10p and 8am session? I am just going to assume that you do because going from10p to 8am would kill me! LOL Maybe if you put a session between 10p and the time you get outta work that could help, but keep all the other sesions as well. Maybe this could help.

  • No, I don't pump overnight usually, DS doesn't BF at all. I usually wake up full but not in pain. maybe because I'm awake all night it's different?

  • After about two weeks, your body and milk production will catch up with your new schedule and you will feel less lumpy after a quick pumping. Also note that less pumping amount with long intervals can sometimes lead to less milk production as I'm noticing here (in my two weeks of work pumping).
