Hello ladies. I'm trying to plan for my baby in July and have ordered a handful of OS pocket diapers to try, and 2 small BG 3.0 since they were on sale. I think I want to get some hemp or bamboo inserts for them, but I love to sew and would like to try and make them myself. Has anyone sewn their own inserts? Can you recommend a pattern or a good insert that I can use as a template to make my own pattern?
Also, which is better, hemp or bamboo, or should I do a combo of the two?
Re: Intro and insert question
Hi and welcome,
Just an FYI, the OS diapers likely won't fit until 10-12 lb, so you may want to stock up on a few smaller sizes.
I'm not a sewer, so I can't help with the patterns. Check out the FAQ for different insert fabrics and their properties.
GL!
Big babies run in my family, too... DS was the smallest baby in three generations at 8 lbs 11 oz. And I still got good use out of my NB stash. Infant prefolds fit him until he was a year old. Even the XS sized covers, fitteds, and AIOs fit for a good two months. Well worth it to not be dealing with leaks everywhere from too-big diapers.
As for inserts... I'm just getting started sewing them, but they don't seem that hard. I made my first insert the other day, for a Softbums Omni diaper, by tracing the insert I already had for it -- easy to sew and works great. If you don't have any inserts on hand to copy, you might just browse various CD web sites and look at the dimensions given for the inserts there.
If you really want a pattern, the free Cloth Revolution diaper pattern includes a pattern for inserts, as well as a handy guide for how many layers to use for different kinds of fabrics:

For hemp vs. bamboo, I generally prefer bamboo, as I think it absorbs more, and faster. But hemp is great, too.

Thank you, that guide for the number of layers with the different fabrics is exactly what I needed to know!
