Has anyone done the run down on this? Which airlines allow you to check it for free (I'm not talking about gate check-in)? Which do not? I just want to avoid the one that doesn't allow it...

American does as well. Keep in mind that most do not provide bags for the chairs though, so be sure to buy a gate check bag or bring jumbo trash bags so that your chair/stroller don't get damaged.
Quick caution...we used the big garbage bag thing the airline provided and our carseat got sucked into the baggage claim carousel at Austin airport. They had to cut one of the belts to get it out. They did loan us a carseat and eventually refunded the cost of a new one (after threats of legal action), but we decided it was worth it to buy one of the zip up canvas bags for air travel going forward.

Both of these airlines provided big clear plastic bags to put them in. They wrapped the car seat up for us.
