Hello. Last week I delivered my little guy at 25.5 weeks due to IC and he has been doing so well his first week and then yesterday we were informed that he has low urinary ouput. They increased his fluids last night and halted wiening him off the humidity. Unforunately, today he is no better and I am anxiously awaiting rounds to see what they say. The dr and nurses kept reassuring me yesterday that it is not uncommon to see this in micropreemies and that they weren't worried yet, however his urinary output has decreased even more since yesterday. I also feel like we are having more and more brady's and apnea episodes. It baffles me because up until yesterday he was urinating very well and they even let him attempt the nasal canula a couple days ago which he pooped out on about 12 hours later. We have been so proud of out little fighter but now I am scared. Our nicu "honeymoon" is clearly over and I was hoping to gain some insight from some of you who may have experienced issues with low urinary output.

Re: Low Urinary Output in Micropreemie
Scarlette was born at 25 weeks and she went through this as well. They gave her medicine to help her urinate. It took a few days to take effect- don't be suprised if they have to put in a catheter, it helps them to measure her output better. I remember breathing each time some pee went into her catheter bag once the meds started working. It's also really normal that it just stopped - Scarlette did the same thing- she was a GREAT little pee-er and then all of the sudden- no pee.
She also had a LOT of apnea/brady episodes right after the "honeymoon" period ended. Her drs will watch her very closely but one day those really do stop- I remember when Scarlette went to having a few a day, then a few a week, then none at all.
I don't want to freak you out but the increased a/b's and the lack of urninary can sometimes be an indicator of a small infection. Scarlette had e-boli at 2 weeks old
but your drs will start antibiotics and clear it up if that's the case. By the time we knew what Scarlette's infection was, she was already better. Like, I said, I don't want to scare you but it is common for babies to get infections in the NICU and I don't want you to be totally shocked if that's what they tell you is causing it.
If it encourages you at all, Scarlette was born at 25 weeks 0 days and has been through a LOT and she is coming home next week
Hello. Sorry to hear you are going through this. We will keep you in our prayers. You probably are having more A's and B's b/c he has extra fluid and his body is working that much harder.
I gave birth to a micropreemie in October. He had his fair share of scary NICU moments. He was born at 1 lb 8 oz. He is now home and really doing well. He doesn't eat on his own (can't coordinate it only taking 5-20 cc's) but no one is worried about him eating regular food.
Being in the NICU is a dark time but remember he is a fighter and he has good parents to help him. Just wanted you to know that when you have a micropreemie that they can come home and live a good healthy life and that there are people that have been where you are now. Hang in there.
