Question about Rowan/Rowen

Lurker with a question, not pg. I just recently fell in love with this name for a boy. But I brought it up to my DH via text message and he hated it. When he got home and we discussed it in person I realized he thought it was pronounced Row-wahn. Is Rowen the spelling you would use for a boy? He is convinced that everybody would pronounce it Row-wahn if it were spelled with an "a". What do you think?

Re: Question about Rowan/Rowen

  • While I can see that not everyone has heard of this name most people have (at least I think so). Plus I would think most people will hear the name before they see it spelled so there's little reason to be concerned with people mispronouncing it due to the spelling.

  • I would spell it Rowan for anyone.

I have a hard time saying ro-WAN the way your DH seems to be. I have to slow way down. When I say it normally, the final vowel gets a bit lost anyway ? it sounds like ROW-in to me. Definitely emphasis on the first syllable.

  • I love Rowan and would spell it this way too.  I pronounce it Row-in.

  • My husband suggested this name to me a couple of months back.  I like it!

  • I've always pronounced it Row-in, and I definitely like the spelling with the a better than the e.
