Its a family name on my mom's side, so there was a Virginia Dare, Ellen Virginia, and my little sister, Virginia Leigh that I am aware of. And my mom's family is from Virginia. I think its a fine name. My little sister goes by VaJayJay to her closest friends, but she's 21 and can take it. I don't think anyone said anything to her before high school that she couldn't shrug off. She went by Ginny until middle school when she decided she wanted to be Virginia.
I personally dislike this name. I think it's a combo of me having a negative personal association with someone with this name I once knew, my general dislike of place names, and the fact that VIRGIN is in the name.
I don't think it's bad, but I don't love it either. If it had family ties in my case, that might be enough to win me over. If you're grandmother was special to you, I think you should use it.

I absolutely LOVE it! It's a family name on my hubby's side. His grandmother was Virginia nn Ginger and his aunt is Virginia nn Ginny. I think it's an absolutely beautiful name that you don't see very often. And what a breath of fresh air next to all of the Emmas and Madisons!!!
I knew a Virginia when I was little who went by "PeePee". Which would've been fine, except that's what most of the little girls in my family and general area called their genitals.

I have a good friend named Virginia and I really like the name, however, she did get called Vagina a lot, so that's something you should keep in mind if you worry about potential nicknames. She seemed to survive it pretty well and I don't know of many names that creative bullies can't find at least one way to make fun of.

Lol, I have to admit I am so confused here. I thought pretty much everywhere in the US people were aware that PeePee has a "bathroom" connotation to it? Did this family really not know that?
I personally have family in Virginia so to me it is a place more than a name. That said, it is a rather lovely name with some nice nn potential that outweighs the bad nn potential. The only Virginia I know is my age (30's) and goes by Ginny (nice, imo).
I'm considering it for a MN right now, it's a family name. I don't love it, but I like it. I think perhaps using it as a MN might be an option to honor your grandmother.
I really like this name. It's on my top 5 list. It's also my grandmother's name and my husband and I met in Virginia so it's got family and sentimental significance. I like the nn Ginger better than Ginny, but both are cute.
I went to undergrad in Virginia & DH & I got married there, too, so I guess I have a lot of positive connotations with the word. But I love that it's a classic name that you don't hear very much (or, at least, I don't!). The fact that it belongs to your grandmother makes it even more special.

I am from a small hick town, but I have no idea how they missed that. I seem to remember them being an odd family in general... I was probably about 6 the last time I saw them though. And my mom never allowed me to call the girl by her NN. She felt that it was an inappropriate thing to call a little girl. I agree

my general dislike of place names, and the fact that VIRGIN is in the name.
What do you want your daughter's name to be, Slutina? What's wrong with Virgin appearing in the name?
I think Virginia is a lovely name. And the nicknames (Gin, Ginny, GInger, Nia, Vee) are adorable too!
It's just a little puritan. Like virtue names: Mercy, Patience, Prudence, Temperence. Technically the state of Virginia was named for Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen, so it's not like we're looking for something that isn't there or that's a coincidence. That's what the word means.
That aside, it's not my favorite, but it is normal, classic, and lends itself to several nicknames. I think Ginny is cute.
This was my grandma's name too, and I like it a lot. She sometimes went by Ginny, which is pretty NN (though some people might not make the association between the two right away). I have a friend named Virginia now who some people call Virg, and I dislike that NN a lot (it just sounds harsh to me).

NMS but it is not offensive and is perfect if there is family significance.
A Virginia I know goes by Nina which I like more than Ginny and Ginger.

We strongly considered it for our DD#2, but nixed it. It's a family name for us too which is why we were thinking about it, but I couldn't stop thinking "vagina" when I first heard Virginia. I know that might sound strange, but it was driving me crazy and I couldn't risk my child being picked on like that.

I think it's a fine name. I know someone my age named Virginia (mid 20's). It may be worth a giggle to some immature teens, but I think it's nothing to worry about. Side note: this Virginia I know, her last name is similar to balls. (She's married, her parents aren't that crazy!) I also love the nn's of Ginny and Ginger. And with family significance, all the better!
I like it. I've thought about using it as a MN. Both my husband and I are from Virginia, and met in college there, so it's got lots of personal connotations. I don't think of it as a place name in the same sense as Paris or Brooklyn, since it is a legitimate name in addition to being a place (like Georgia). I love Ginger as a NN, and Ginny's very cute.
Virginia is lovely, in my opinion! I think it's so classy, feminine, sturdy and simple. I've seen it a few times as a middle name and it's always so striking and unexpected. Two thumbs up!
My dad's aunt and a girl his cousin fostered when I was little are both named Virginia. My aunt goes by Ginny and my foster cousin went by Virginia. It's NMS, so I wouldn't use it, but I think it's a lovely name and I only have positive feelings attached to it

I agree. I don't think there is anything wrong with the name, it's just NMS. Plus I live in Virginia so that makes it even worse for me.
Re: Virginia
I went to school with a Virginia, she was never teased for her name. It's an okay name just NMS

NMS. I'm not a fan of place names. If I used it at all, I would only use it as a middle name.
I agree with all of this.

I love it! It's a classic name and I have my grandma on my dad's side named that and have it as my grandma on my mom's side - her middle name.
Virginia is more than a place name - the state is named after Queen Elizabeth "the Virgin Queen." Kind of like how "Georgia" is named for King George.
I like Virginia, but I like classic names.
